New baby aardvark born at Busch Gardens Tampa

Busch Gardens recently debuted it’s newest resident, an adorable baby aardvark. The young aardvark was born on Monday, March 26, 2012. He currently lives at Jambo Junction located in the Nairobi area of the park.

The healthy baby weighs about 4.8 pounds and is expected to grow to more than 120 pounds within its first year. While the baby has no hair right now and may look a little strange, its body will eventually be covered in hair as it gets older. The baby will join mom, Izzy, and dad, Friz, in the upcoming weeks and will be an Animal Ambassador for the park, along with its older brother Zawadi, who just turned a year old on April 10. The sex is still undetermined so a name has yet to be chosen for this cute little one.

There are fewer than 40 aardvarks in zoos in North America. With fewer than a dozen successful births each year, aardvark births are not common. They are solitary by nature, only Busch Gardens is home to a male and female, with the Zawadi and this little one making four.

You can see the baby aardvark daily at Jambo Junction located in the Nairobi area of the park.
