On Oct. 1, 1971, exactly 38 years ago, Walt Disney World first opened to the public. The resort at the time featured just one theme park, the Magic Kingdom, and two hotels, the Polynesian Village Resort and the Contemporary Resort.
Today, the ongoing celebration at Walt Disney World is called “What Will You Celebrate?” and centers around the idea of celebrating special occasions, which include birthdays and anniversarys, of course. Part of the fun is showing that you are celebrating something by wearing a button around the parks indicating what your special occasion is.
So we thought there’d be no better way to celebrate the 38th birthday of Walt Disney World and the Magic Kingdom than by giving birthday buttons to some of its most famous residents and a few guests:
Okay, yeah, these buttons were Photoshopped but wouldn’t it be fun if everyone visiting or working at Walt Disney World today wore one of these? If you’re heading there today, make sure to pick up one of these birthday buttons at any of the Guest Relations locations and write “Walt Disney World,” “Magic Kingdom,” “Contemporary Resort,” or “Polynesian Village Resort” on it to show that you are also celebrating 38 years of magic in Central Florida. (We also want to wish a very happy 27th birthday to Epcot today.)
And if you’re not going to be at Walt Disney World today, feel free to print the button below and wear it around town, showing that you appreciate having the Disney parks and resorts around. After all, if Walt Disney hadn’t decided to build his “Florida project” here, Orlando would definitely not be the exciting and entertaining place that it is today.
Happy birthday, Walt Disney World!
