During a brief test this morning at Universal Studios Florida, metal detectors were placed at the entrance to Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit roller coaster to help keep loose articles from being taken on the coaster.

As the park opened, guests found several metal detectors placed right inside the entrance to the coaster, as you can see in the photo above. A new sign was also placed near the ride for guests to see. Similar signs stating that no loose articles are allowed have been outside the attraction for some time.

By 1:30 p.m. the detectors were already taken down and normal operations commenced.

Robb Alvey, owner of ThemeParkReview.com, commented, “In all my travels which includes at least 400 parks across the globe, I have never seen metal detectors installed on a ride. This is going a bit too far.” There’s no word on if more metal detector tests will happen again at Rockit, or the other Universal roller coasters or rides. Photos courtesy of Magic City Mayhem

UPDATE (3/26/15): Universal spokesman Tom Schroder sent us a statement about the test, saying:

We have long prevented loose items such as cell phones, key rings, cameras and selfie sticks from being brought onto our coasters. Today, we began testing metal detection as an enhanced approach to our existing safety efforts. We believe it will help us identify items we will ask our guests to secure separately prior to their ride. Our test today went very smoothly and our guests seemed to understand and support what we were doing.

UPDATE (4/9/15): Universal today expanded their metal detector testing to Islands of Adventure, installing them outside The Incredible Hulk coaster and Dragon Challenge. No word on how long they will be in place.
