Disney Genie Service, paid ‘Lightning Lane’ coming to Disneyland, Walt Disney World

The era of FastPass has come and gone, and Disney Genie is coming this fall to Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort to reinvent the guest experience.

Built into the My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps, Disney Genie will “maximize your park time” with a personalized itinerary feature to map out your entire day, down to what attractions you go on, dining experiences, entertainment, and more — all you have to do is “tell” Disney Genie what you want to to do and it will do the planning for you.

Other features include:

  • Get itinerary updates from morning to night: Disney Genie will continue to update your itinerary throughout the day, allowing you to be more spontaneous with your vacation.
  • Find your favorites: Create your own tip board to instantly see your favorite Disney Parks offerings. Here you’ll find current and forecasted future wait times, helping you better predict when you might experience quicker entry to attractions.
  • More flexibility: Disney Genie will also host virtual queues for certain attractions, allow guests to make dining and experience reservations, mobile order food at many locations, get help from a virtual assistant, and more.

To eliminate further stress when it comes to planning your Disney day, there are two other options thanks to a new offering called “Lightning Lane.”

Disney Genie+

For $15 per ticket per day at Walt Disney World Resort and $20 per ticket per day at Disneyland Resort, guests can use the Disney Genie+ service to choose the next available time to arrive at a variety of attractions and experiences by utilizing the Lightning Lane entrance.

With this option, guests can make one selection at a time, throughout the day — making this what Disney calls the “next evolution” of Disney MaxPass from Disneyland Resort. Disney Genie+ will also include Disney Parks-themed audio experiences and photo features, augmented reality (AR) lenses for those visiting Walt Disney World, and unlimited Disney PhotoPass downloads from the day if you’re visiting Disneyland.

Lightning Lane for individual attractions

The other option is to purchase Lightning Lane for individual attractions, where guests can schedule a time to arrive at up to two attractions each day using the Lightning Lane entrance (subject to limited availability; these attractions are not included with Disney Genie+). Pricing for this option will depend on the day of your visit, attraction, and park. More details will be announced closer to the service’s launch.

Lightning Lane selections will be made on the same day of your visit, and can be used across multiple parks for those who enjoy the Park Hopper ticket option. However, attractions will continue to offer the traditional standby queue, or a virtual queue at certain attractions like Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.

At this time, there will be no discounts available for Disney Genie+ or individual attraction Lightning Lane purchases. Passholders and Magic Key holders will be able to add these options on the day of their visit like regular day guests.

At Walt Disney World, Disney resort guests can make their first Disney Genie+ selection at 7 a.m. on the day of their visit. Lighting Lane individual attractions can be purchased starting at park opening, but those staying at a Disney Resort hotel can purchase Lighting Lane passes starting at 7 a.m., before other guests not staying at the onsite hotels. At Disneyland Resort, guests can make all their selections once they’re actually in the park.

With the launch of Disney Genie, this means that FastPass, FastPass+ and Disney MaxPass will be retired from the domestic Disney Parks. Enhancements will also be made to Disney’s Disability Access Service (DAS) program, including new options to enroll in the program prior to arriving and for DAS participants to choose attractions directly in the app. These options will be available in addition to the current in-person DAS program.

  1. This is an infuriating money grab on Disney’s part. First they raise ticket prices and NOW they charge for the ability to ensure access to sought after attractions. They are taking the fun out of park visits. We are hardcore fans and freque t visitors but this might be a dealbreaker. Shame on you Disney for taking the magic away.
