Eat rainbow grilled cheese and other unique food at the Florida State Fair

A rainbow grilled cheese sandwich fit for a unicorn, fried dough covered in Creole sausage, and pickle-topped pizza are among the unusual edibles that visitors will find at the Florida State Fair, which is returning to the Tampa fairgrounds from Feb. 7-18.

The Florida State Fair, which is held in Tampa each February, opens on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019, and runs through Feb. 18 at the Florida State Fairgrounds. This year, the “largest Midway in the United States” features an extensive list of over-the-top fair food. Here’s a small sampling of the savory and sweet heart-stoppers that will be sold:

In addition to the aforementioned rainbow grilled cheese (a blend of mozzarella, provolone and Gouda that are colored with food dye), The Giddy Piggy also makes a melted sandwich stuffed with Jalapeno poppers:

Bryan’s Concessions makes a BuffaloadedMac and Cheese Quesadilla loaded with shredded buffalo chicken and queso mac and cheese, topped with bacon and crushed up Doritos:

The Best Around’s Red Beans and Rice Funnel Cake is made by using spices, red beans, and rice mixed in the batter. Then they add smoked sausage, onions, peppers and beans on top:

Lock and Dam Eatery will serve Italian Nachos, fried pita chips topped with shrimp, tomatoes, banana peppers, chives and lobster cream sauce:

Carousel Foods has Pork Rind Nachos topped with BBQ Pork, Shredded Melted Cheese, Jalapeños, and Tomatoes:

Finally, you’ll find a Cuban Pizza, featuring a Dijonnaise base topped with roast pork, ham and pickles, at Pizza Emporium:

In addition to all the food, the Florida State Fair will have all day entertainment including Lady Houdini, All-Star Stunt Dogs Splash, Bello Nock Super Stunt Show, the Budweiser Clydesdales, Circus Hollywood, Demolition Derby, Extreme Illusions & Escapes, Kachunga Alligator Show, Hollywood Racing Pigs, Moto Maniacs Xtreme, Tyzen the Comedy Hypnotist, Zaji Amazing Acrobats of China, and more.

Advance tickets and ride armbands at participating Publix locations through February 6, 2019 and online at floridastatefair.com. Advance ticket prices are $9 for adult admission, $5 for a child and $7 for seniors. Weekday Ride Armbands are $20 and Any Day Ride Armbands are $30. Advance ticket sales for the $79 Mega Pass which provides unlimited admission and rides throughout the entirety of the Fair, and the Senior Five Day Pass, are available through www.FloridaStateFair.com or the Box Office. Promotional discount days include Heroes Day on Feb. 7 (Military, police, fire and first responders receive free admission for themselves and up to three guests) and $2 Tuesday after 2 p.m. on Feb. 12.
