Kennywood Park celebrates 70 years of Fall Fantasy Parades

Kennywood Park is celebrating the 70th anniversary of one of their oldest traditions – the Fall Fantasy Parades!

Over 150 marching bands from high schools and colleges throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio will perform live music and nightly parades from Aug. 3-20. The tradition began in 1950 as an effort to increase attendance in the month of August, which is generally their slowest period. Now, with Fall Fantasy, the park experiences one of its busiest times of the summer.

“Fall Fantasy has become a wonderful tradition for Kennywood and our local communities,” says Jerome Gibas, general manager. “The parades serve as one last chance to soak up summer before the school year begins and see the region’s talented young people take center stage.”

This year’s Fall Fantasy theme is “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” based on L. Frank Baum’s classic story. Kennywood’s Art Department has designed floats that will depict Munchkin Country, the gates to the Emerald City, and more, which will be mixed in with each night’s performing bands.

The Fall Fantasy Parades start at 7 p.m. nightly from Saturday, Aug. 3 – Tuesday, Aug. 20, which also marks the end of the park’s daily operating schedule. Starting Aug. 21, the park will only be open on weekends and Labor Day until the Summer Season comes to an end on Sunday, Sept. 15.
