Legoland Florida’s newest coaster, The Great Lego Race, opens on March 23.

Guests at Legoland Florida Resort will soon be able to put their pedal to the plastic when their newest attraction, The Great Lego Race, holds its grand opening on Friday, March 23.

The Great Lego Race will be the first virtual reality (VR) roller coaster designed with kids in mind, as well as the first time that the Lego brand and its minifigure characters will be integrated into a theme park attraction through VR technology.

With wild animated action happening on the ground and in the air, this race will pit guests against a pirate, wizard, surfer and pharaoh as they drive Lego-built vehicles including a stylish scooter fueled by espresso, a rocket-powered windsurfing rig, and a canopied bed called a “litter” carried by mummy servants.

Wearing optional VR headsets, guests will experience action all around them while riding the roller coaster in an environment where everything is made of Lego bricks.

The Great Lego Race opening date revealed for Legoland Florida Resort

In November 2017, members of the media were able to catch a sneak preview of the 360-degree adventure during the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) trade show in Orlando.

A similar preview can be found in MackMedia’s Coastiality mobile app, which showcases the attraction’s visuals. The free app is currently available on iOS, Android and Oculus devices, and can be enjoyed with or without a VR headset.

Guests must be at least 42 inches tall to ride The Great Lego Race, or be joined by an adult at least 48 inches tall. The VR headsets will be able to fit both adults and children and are adjustable. The VR experience is designed for children ages 6 and up, and riders can choose to enjoy the coaster with or without wearing the headset.

After crossing the finish line on the coaster, guests can refuel with a treat at Funnel Cake Factory, which is set to open this spring just a few steps away from the roller coaster in Legoland Florida’s Lego Technic area. The themed pit stop will offer made-to-order funnel cakes with toppings like powdered sugar, fresh fruit and soft-serve ice cream.

The Great Lego Race starts its engines on March 23. For more information, visit legoland.com/florida.
