After 18 years, Shrek and friends will be riding their onion carriage off into the sunset, as Shrek 4-D is set to permanently close at Universal Orlando Resort.

The attraction, located at Universal Studios Florida, will shut its doors for good in January 2022; the news was shared with Universal team members via an internal memo earlier today.

“Shrek 4-D and its corresponding gift shop will permanently close at Universal Studios Florida on Jan. 10, 2022,” said Universal in a statement. “Also, The Revenge of the Mummy coaster at Universal Studios Florida will be closed for maintenance beginning Jan. 7 through late summer 2022.”

Team members who work at the attraction will be relocated, with more details on this to be shared at a later date. In addition, there is no announced replacement for the attraction — we’re hoping for something like The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash!

Shrek 4-D, otherwise known as “The Ghost of Lord Farquaad” for streaming releases of the film, is a 4D simulator ride with motion-based effects and water sprayers. The ride, set immediately after the events of the first film, follows Shrek and Donkey on a quest to rescue Princess Fiona from the ghost of Lord Farquaad. Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and John Lithgow all return to voice their original roles.

The attraction was also formerly located at Universal Studios Hollywood, but was closed in 2017 to make way for the DreamWorks Theatre.

  1. I’m saddened by this as it was the first ride my then-young family visited after arriving in Florida from England, back in 2010.

It was, and remains good fun, and is the epitome of what a family holiday is all about.
