Theater Review: ‘White Christmas’ exudes the ’50s holiday spirit

Watching “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas” (based on the 1954 film) makes you feel like you’re watching a Norman Rockwell painting come to life. The cast’s talent, mixed with the costumes and sets draws you into the Christmas season of the mid-1950s.

Bob (Sean Montgomery) and Phil (Jeremy Benton) are former soldiers who fought in World War II and are now a famous singing and dancing duo. After a show one night, they receive a letter from one of their old Army buddies, telling them to check out a sister act performing not too far from them. When they go to see the two sisters, Betty (Kerry Conte) and Judy (Kelly Sheehan), Phil and Judy are taken with each other from the moment they meet, while it seems like Bob and Betty couldn’t have any less in common.

Phil and Judy hatch a plan to trick Phil into coming with the sisters to their next gig at an inn in snowy Vermont. Upon arriving, it appears no one will be there for the holidays because an unusual heat wave has stopped it from snowing at all. To make matters more interesting, the inn is run by the boys’ former commanding officer! So to lure in customers, the boys agree to stay and put on a show. Antics and romance ensue.

The 1950s is my absolute favorite aesthetic. I just love the clothes and look of all of the people and decor. This show completely transports you there, and is completely perfect for the holiday season. Betty and Bob both looked and sounded phenomenal – the perfect ’50s couple. I wish I had a chance to see this cast’s performance again. Don’t miss it.
