Details revealed for Zootopia-themed land at Shanghai Disneyland
Shanghai Disney Resort shared new details about what guests can expect when the world’s first Zootopia-themed land opens this year at Shanghai Disneyland, including an all-new attraction, Zootopia: Hot Pursuit.
As guests explore Zootopia, they’ll encounter favorite characters through one-of-a-kind live entertainment experiences, including Fru Fru and her father Mr. Big, Koslov the polar bear, Flash the sloth, Yax the yak, Duke Weaselton, the weasel, and, of course, the Hopps family, who all interact with each other (and with guests) from the windows of Zootopia’s iconic building, which incorporates animal motifs in the architecture.
“The beloved Disney Animation film ‘Zootopia’has fostered a strong connection with its audience since its debut [and] we are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring that very connection to life right here in Shanghai with this one-of-a-kind themed land,” said Shanghai Disney Resort President and General Manager Joe Schott. “Over years of development […] talent from more than 140 disciplines worked tirelessly to create a unique ‘mammalian’ experience for our guests, immersing them in this metropolis’ vibrant animal world. We are extremely proud of what they’ve created and confident that everyone will be amazed from their very first step into Zootopia.”
Zootopia: Hot Pursuit Attraction
The residents of Zootopia are getting ready for a big Zootopia Day celebration featuring Gazelle (voiced in the movie by Shakira), known for her hit song “Try Everything!”
Guests will become rookie police officers at the Zootopia Police Department (ZPD) who, shortly after being greeted by Officer Clawhauser, will be rushed into an emergency briefing from Chief Bogo where they learn they’ll have to leap into action to help Officer Judy Hopps and her partner Nick Wilde (now an official ZPD officer) to save the superstar, who has been kidnapped by Bellwether and her gang.
The action-filled police chase uses a trackless ride system to take riders through Zootopia’s iconic terrains from the ice of Tundra Town to the streets of Sahara Square to the canopies of the Rainforest District, all in the pursuit of Bellwether.
Zootopia is Fully-Immersive
From the moment they enter the Zootopia-themed land, guests will be immersed in the story from the Mane Street storefronts of varying sizes to accommodate animal customers big and small to Savannah Central featuring billboards featuring animated advertisements for popular Zootopia brands.
The land also features fixtures and facilities scaled to accommodate animals of all sizes, like drinking fountains of different heights and benches of various sizes.
In addition to custom-made business signs and billboards, the Zootopia-themed land is fully activated through innovative new technologies that bring its citizens to life, including:
- Zootopia Central Station, where a large metro train can be seen passing behind an upper-level decorative stained-glass window, picking up and dropping off animal commuters just as it did in the film.
- The Tiger Dance Club where Gazelle’s famed tiger dancers (powered by advanced media effects) can be seen in the second-story windows celebrating Zootopia Day.
- The Zootopia Transit Authority has just completed the new state-of-the-art “hyper-tube” used by Lemmings on their way to and from work at the Lemming Brothers Bank and other businesses. Like in the film, a series of drop-off points showcase how Zootopia’s smallest citizens deboard the system.
- Zootopia Fitness, where a full-sized giraffe can be spotted running on a treadmill, with the belt becoming a gym for mice running on the hamster wheel-like gears.
Treats From “Zootopia”
Guests visiting Zootopia will have the chance to try themed treats at Jumbeaux Cafe, the ice cream shop featured in the Walt Disney Animation Studios film.
Guests can try the sweet-and-tart fox paw-shaped hawthorn berry popsicle (as seen in the movie) and Officer Clawhauser’s favorite snack – The Big Donut – which will be offered in two different sizes to meet the needs of animals (and appetites), big or small.
Zootopia will also feature the Disney Zootopia blueberry pie, a carrot-shaped lollipop in honor of Bunnyburrow, and a chocolate marshmallow that mimics the look of the “Jumbo-pop” popsicle from the movie.
In addition, three well-known soft drinks fromPepsiCo (the primary beverage sponsor to the resort) – Pepsi, 7up, and Mirinda – will feature brand new animal-inspired names that echo the Chinese characters of deer, rhino, and sheep. The three Zootopified drinks with specially designed labels will be available exclusively at Shanghai Disneyland.
Fashions by Fru Fru
Resident fashionista Fru Fru owns this shop at the entrance of Mane Street, featuring hundreds of themed products (many designed especially for the new themed land), including the Zootopia Cute collection, as well as new headwear, apparel, accessories, and more. Inside the store are also two special areas themed after Yax and Duke Weaselton.
Mr. Big’s polar “henchbear,” Koslov, even stands guard at the store’s main entrance and snarls at shoppers who get too close.
As one of the resort’s key corporate collaborators, Skechers will debut their all-new Zootopified brand logo – SHI-KECHERS – featuring a lion’s tail, mane, and the Chinese character for “lion.”
In addition to the logo, SHI-KECHER will be part of the city experience through an ad on benches and special commercials on Zootopia’s oversized digital billboard.
Zootopia Collaborations
Zootopia elements will also be incorporated into offerings from the resort’s alliance collaborators:
- PANDORA, the official charm bracelet of Shanghai Disney Resort, will create a brand-new charm themed to the famous paw-shaped popsicle from the film
- DEI (Digiphoto Entertainment Imaging), the official Imaging Service Sponsor of Shanghai Disney Resort that provides the iconic Disney PhotoPass experience, will introduce brand new Zootopia-themed photo frames
- Invengo, the exclusive provider of the Shanghai Disney Resort Magic Passport and Magical Mementos, will offer the option of creating specially-themed souvenirs.
