Disney is bringing movie magic to a village in Ireland for ‘Disenchanted’

Enniskerry, a picturesque Irish village in County Wicklow, is being transformed into a Disney movie set for “Disenchanted,” a sequel to the much-loved “Enchanted” (2007) starring Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, and Idina Menzel set to premiere on Disney+ in 2022.

Just 30-minutes south of Dublin, Enniskerry features charming shops, cottages, and a triangular village center with a clock tower. As one of Ireland’s loveliest and most popular villages, it’s the gateway to County Wicklow, known as the “Garden of Ireland.”

Giant film sets are being constructed in the village by teams of builders, carpenters, and painters as Disney sprinkles its special brand of magic on Enniskerry, including a castle set and a massive town hall being constructed on one side of the village.

In addition, a casting call went out for Irish extras for the movie, and several shops and businesses are getting new temporary fronts. One of the roads in the town will even be painted purple before the cameras roll. Other locations in Wicklow and Dublin are also expected to be part of the production.

“There’s going to be two sets of filming [in the village],“ said Peter Norton of Poppies restaurant in Enniskerry. “One before it gets ‘Disneyfied’ and one after it gets ‘Disneyfied.’ In one of the scenes, there’s going to be 200 dancers. It’s going to be amazing.”

Filming for “Disenchanted” is scheduled to take place between May and August with Adam Shankman (“Hairspray,” “Hocus Pocus 2”) directing. All four key members of the original “Enchanted” cast are returning for the sequel: Adams (who previously worked in Enniskerry for the 2010 romantic comedy “Leap Year”), Dempsey (who will be making his singing debut), Menzel, and Marsden. Maya Rudolph, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Jayma Mays will also be joining the cast as villains.

According to composer Stephen Schwartz, “Disenchanted” will have more songs than the original movie.

“There are seven songs plus reprises,” he said. “We wrote a song for Idina’s character in the first movie, and then they didn’t have her do it. But in ‘Disenchanted’ she has one big number and part of another one.”

Wicklow has a long history as a film location and has been seen in “Braveheart,” “PS I Love You,” “Vikings,” “The Tudors,” and many more. Film buffs who take the many film tours and drives in the area can now look forward to seeing the new Disney filming locations in Enniskerry.
