Busch Gardens Tampa welcomes new red kangaroo

The baby boom continues at Busch Gardens Tampa with the birth of a red kangaroo joey. He is currently in being taken care of by the animal care team at Jambo Junction, where guests can see him each day.

His name is Coogie and he is a male. Coogie was born a few weeks ago but his mothers pouch had a skin infection so the animal care team stepped in to take care of him. They have been working around the clock to care for and bottle feed him at Jambo Junction since his birth. His mother’s pouch has since been taken care of, but he will continue to stay in the team’s care and be an animal ambassador for the park.

The red kangaroo is the world’s largest marsupial. Females have one baby at a time, which at birth is smaller than a cherry. The infant immediately climbs into its mother’s pouch and does not emerge for two months so in this case, the animal care team created a pouch for him to replicate that of his mothers. The birth of joeys isn’t uncommon but it is a great educational experience for guests who visit the park.

Stay tuned to Orlando Attractions Magazine for even more news from Busch Gardens Tampa as Christmas Town, the parks first ever separate-ticketed holiday event, is coming up soon.
