Bombs Away drop slide launches at Sandcastle water park in 2022

The Bombs Away extreme drop slide literally pulls the floor out from under riders, sending them screaming down a 305-foot twisting, turning, freefall flight, at speeds up to 26 feet per second.

As sister park Kennywood begins its Holiday Lights celebration, Sandcastle made the announcement that its long-awaited drop slide will open in summer, 2022.

The slide starts with an enclosed launch capsule and ends with a six-story drop as the floor vanishes beneath rider’s feet. And the time spent anticipating the drop is utterly pulse-pounding!

“Guests have been waiting to blast off on Bombs Away, and Sandcastle’s newest attraction is perfect for all water park thrill-seekers,” said Kennywood and Sandcastle General Manager, Mark Pauls. “This drop is over the top, and riders will love looping around and around to the splash down.”

Bombs Away will debut as part of Sandcastle’s ultimate Steel City Summer event.

In addition to the big announcement, all three Pittsburgh parks — Kennywood, Sandcastle, and Idlewild & SoakZone — will expand their operating schedules, adding extended days and hours. The extra hours mean guests will be able to enjoy summer night rides again.

Kennywood will also bring back their popular Bites and Pints Food & Drink Festival, and Sandcastle will see the return of Jammin’ July Weekends. Special annual events will return to all three parks, along with Season Passholder Appreciation Days. Further “surprises” will be revealed soon.

“We have huge plans for the parks next year,” Pauls added, “and we won’t even make people wait until Christmas Day to get some of these gifts. Stay tuned for more exciting news very soon.”
