Busch Gardens Tampa Bay welcomed a new member of the family over the weekend. A female reticulated giraffe was born in the park’s giraffe barn on Saturday to mother Celina and father Sterling. This is the second calf for Celina, who was, herself, born at Busch Gardens in 2002.

Zookeepers anticipate giving mother and baby four to six months in the privacy of the barn area to bond and develop before introducing them onto Busch Gardens’ Serengeti Plain. The 65-acre plain features free-roaming herds of giraffes, zebra, antelope and ostrich, and is accessible to guests via the Serengeti Safari tour, the Serengeti Express train, or from several viewing points along the Edge of Africa pathway.

The new baby, who has not yet been named, brings the park’s giraffe population to 16. Reticulated giraffes are so named because of the net-like pattern of their spots.
