Carowinds announces Copperhead Strike, Carolinas’ first double launch coaster

Carowinds announced many new additions for their 2019 season this morning via live stream, but the highlight of those was the reveal of Copperhead Strike, the first-ever double launch coaster in the Carolinas.

Copperhead Strike will open in spring 2019.

The backstory for this new coaster is an interesting one – it tells of Granny Byrd and her blue ribbon-winning jam recipe that had owned the county fair for 40 years. Those who want her recipe must head to her broken-down farm at the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and beware of the copperhead infestation.

Once at the farm’s shed, a feeling of unease sets in. With a peek inside, guests will realize that she’s not making jam in her big, copper vats – it’s moonshine!

Suddenly, you hear a voice holler “Trespassers! Y’all git outta here!” A gun cocks and you know you have to get out of there. The escape vehicle is none other than Carowinds’ newest coaster, Copperhead Strike.

Copperhead Strike will earn its double launch classification with an initial launch from 0 to 42 miles per hour in 2.5 seconds, and then a second thrust of acceleration midway through the experience. The coaster will feature close-to-the-ground movements, over half a mile of track and five inversions – the most of any double launch coaster in North America.

This new coaster will open as the cornerstone attraction of a new, immersive themed area called Blue Ridge Junction in 2019. To learn more about Copperhead Junction and Carowinds’ other planned additions for 2019, visit Carowinds.com.
