How Disney experiments with live entertainment on the Destiny cruise ship
Disney Destiny live entertainment creates “meet & play” opportunities with heroes and villains for next-gen character interactions.

Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Destiny live entertainment takes a hero’s journey to villainous heights. Stepping off the new Disney Destiny, you can’t help but have the songs of “The Lion King” running through your head or continuing humming “Go the Distance” from “Hercules.” While Disney’s “Hercules” on stage and the “Pride Lands: Feast of the Lion King” dinner show headline productions on the Disney Destiny, live entertainment takes place throughout the ship and is a highlight of the sailing.
Sure, all Disney ships have theatrical shows, cabaret performers, and characters, but what makes the Disney Destiny different? It’s the heroes and villains’ storyline woven throughout the sailing. The Disney Treasure debuted two original storyteller characters, Coriander and Sage, to help guide guests through the week-long sailing. They were a great addition and huge hit, so the Disney Destiny got their own storytelling trunk show duo, Zayah and Gamble. However, the pair doesn’t just retell “mostly accurate” versions of heroic tales. They bring us into a new story when the villains appear.

Opening night, we’re introduced to Zayah and Gamble in the Grand Hall. These talented performers regale us with the Norse mythology story of Odin, Thor, Hela, and Loki, when, all of a sudden, storytelling trunks change color and lighting throughout the Grand Hall shifts to a greenish glow as the God of Mischief, Loki, appears. As the trickster descends the staircase, Loki proclaims himself ruler and all the ship’s guests his subjects. This is how Disney Destiny re-imagined character interactions from traditional meet & greets to immersive “meet & play” experiences. Instead of lining up for traditional photos, Loki works the room, holding court and inviting his subjects for photos during story elements involving you.

Other meet and play opportunities pop up throughout the voyage. Zayah and Gamble drop in at De Vil’s piano lounge to lead us in a singing of Cruella De Vil’s theme when the fur-draped baddie shows up and brings the tune to a screeching halt.
Maleficent casts spells in her dungeon and recruits guests to locate Princess Aurora. The Mistress-of-all-Evil calls upon audience members to prove their devotion to her with a sinister cackle.

One of the most buzz-worthy interactions is a visit to Dr. Facilier’s parlor for a select few guests. No photos or videos are allowed during this intimate pop-up that accommodates only 8-12 guests at a time. Those who made it inside his den during our sailing found themselves face-to-face with the treacherous charmer, with friends on the other side. Once Dr. Facilier’s oversized hat lifted, the grinning huckster urged three visitors forward and engaged in an intimidating game of cards with a dose of close-up magic.

These next-gen Villain encounters enhance the sailing. This level of immersive storytelling simply does not exist on any other Disney ship. Never fear, those intimidated by the prospect of being singled out to become part of the story, there are plenty of traditional meet & greets available too. But for those willing to suspend disbelief, the Disney Destiny gives the chance to step outside the everyday and play.
The storytellers Zayah and Gamble create a throughline for the length of the voyage. Guests seek out their experiences, such as the hilarious adults-only show “With Great Power: A Marvel Comedy Show.” The fast-paced act offers a satirical send-up of classic Marvel superheroes Captain America, Tony Stark, Spider-Man, and a surprise appearance by a “for mature audiences only” wisecracking antihero.
Even with all that, “With Great Power” offers another unexpected treat: a swinging diva lounge singer who opens and closes the show. She gets the crowd going, belting out a powerful version of “Mr. Blue Sky.” We knew we were in for a good time. “Hey there, Mr. Blue… everybody smiles at you.” Later in the cruise, we noticed that the same lounge singer was also performing on the main stage as one of Hercules’ Muses.

This became a recurring theme. Not only did Zayah and Gamble show up multiple times in various places each night, so did the other talented performers. Members of the “Hercules” ensemble finished back-to-back shows only to change into pirate outfits and join the crew on the top deck for the “Pirate’s Rockin’ Parlay” party. The house band that played in The Sanctum lounge was the featured pirate band for the dance party too. Having a live band playing classic rock standards like “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and then sliding effortlessly into Hans Zimmer’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” score to back the fireworks at sea certainly elevates Disney Cruise Line’s traditional Pirates in the Caribbean party.

Another group pulling double-duty on board the Disney Destiny were the performers for “Pride Lands: Feast of the Lion King.” This signature dinner show is backed by authentic African drummers who serve as the beating heart of the entire experience.

This musical group also headlined their own “Sounds of Wakanda” Grand Hall set that culminated with a grand entrance by King T’Challa, Black Panther. Later on, when I met Black Panther, I mentioned how I enjoyed the “Sounds of Wakanda” drummers, and T’Challa instantly explained how the different tribes of Wakanda use different drums and instruments. I was struck again at how this became another story thread connecting the “Lion King” one night with Black Panther days later, offering a heightened level of “meet & play” immersion.

Disney Cruise Line levels up its Disney Destiny live entertainment without getting rid of the traditional standards families have come to love. There are plenty of game shows and trivia contests giving you a chance to take home a medal. Multiple piano players host sing-alongs in De Vil’s, and there’s plenty of karaoke as well. The hero and villain programming exclusive to the Disney Destiny is in addition to all the live entertainment you know and love. These meet & play opportunities enhance the guest experience and allow you to step into the story and engage your family to make connections together.
