Harry Potter HBO series is casting Harry, Ron, and Hermione
The “Harry Potter” HBO series has begun its search for actors to portray Harry, Ron, and Hermione for the next decade.

HBO seeks actors to audition for ‘Harry Potter’ series
Warner Bros. is developing a “Harry Potter” television series to broadcast on HBO and stream on Max, and the studio invites young actors to audition for the parts of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, as shared by the official Harry Potter Instagram page.

According to the official audition notice on Cast It, actors should be between the ages of 9 and 11 as of April 2025. Hopefuls also must be residents of the U.K. or Ireland.
In the original Warner Bros. movies, Harry, Ron, and Hermione were portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, respectively, but kids who audition for the new HBO series need not match those actors’ exact features. CastIt says, “We are committed to inclusive, diverse casting … without regard to ethnicity, sex, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other basis protected by law unless otherwise specifically indicated.”

The audition notice says filming will commence in 2025 and 2026. That being said, the role will likely be a much longer commitment; HBO plans to produce one season for each of the seven “Harry Potter” books, predicting the series could span the course of a decade.
To audition, young actors must submit a 30-second video reciting a short story, poem, or monologue, as well as a one-minute video introducing themselves and describing a close family member, friend, or pet. In both videos, applicants should speak in their own accent. Submissions are open until Oct. 31, 2024.
The series is expected to debut in 2026 (or at least, that was Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav’s estimation as of February 2024, according to The Hollywood Reporter).
Behind the camera of the new ‘Harry Potter’ HBO series
The series was first announced in April 2023. Its leadership team includes:
- Showrunner: Francesca Gardiner
- Writer: Francesca Gardiner
- Director of multiple episodes (unknown how many): Mark Mylod
- Production companies: Warner Bros. Television, Bronté Film and TV
- Executive producers: Neil Blair, Francesca Gardiner, David Heyman, Ruth Kenley-Letts, Mark Mylod, J.K. Rowling
Showrunner, writer, and executive producer Francesca Gardiner previously served as consulting producer on 17 of the 39 episodes of “Succession.” Gardiner also co-executive produced “Killing Eve” and wrote and executive produced “His Dark Materials.”
Executive producer David Heyman is a “Potter” veteran, having produced all eight films in WB’s original film saga (from 2001’s “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” all the way through 2011’s “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2”) as well as all three films in the “Fantastic Beasts” prequel series. Beyond “Potter,” Heyman’s producing credits include “Barbie” and the “Paddington” films, among others.
New Wizarding World in Orlando
Fans won’t have to wait until the 2026 HBO series for more “Harry Potter” projects. In 2025, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic will open as part of Universal Orlando’s new Epic Universe theme park.

The anchor of the new area will be Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, a high-tech ride starring Imelda Staunton reprising her role as Delores Umbridge. Harry, Ron, and Hermione will also be part of the attraction, but Universal hasn’t confirmed if Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson returned to film new footage.
