‘How to Train Your Dragon’ live-action trailer breakdown
The live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” trailer is here, ahead of the DreamWorks remake’s June 13, 2025 release date in theaters.

We, my friend, have dragons … again! Universal revealed the first trailer of DreamWorks’ “How to Train Your Dragon” live-action remake on Nov. 19, 2024. Summer 2025 seems like it will be a big season for “How to Train Your Dragon” fans, as the new movie will release a little under a month after How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk opens at Universal Epic Universe in Orlando, Fla. on May 22.
Let’s dive into this trailer and see how much it shares with the beloved 2010 DreamWorks Academy Award-nominated classic!
Live-action ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ trailer
The trailer opens with Hiccup (Mason Thames) sitting atop a grassy hill on the Isle of Berk overlooking the ocean.

The next frame showcases Hiccup’s Father, Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler) sailing through the mist. In the first animated movie, Stoick is known for his hatred of dragons.

We get our first close up look at Mason Thames as Hiccup. He more closely resembles the older Hiccup in the second and third “How to Train Your Dragon” films.

After Hiccup tells his dad he “Can’t kill dragons,” we get our first look at a cavern swarming with the dragons that have tormented Berk.

“But you will,” Stoick commands Hiccup, in another up-close look at Gerard Butler as Hiccup’s Viking father.

After this buildup, we finally get our first look at the adorable Toothless, when Hiccup and the Night Fury dragon meet face-to-face for the first time.
In the animated “How To Train Your Dragon,” this moment comes just before Hiccup reluctantly goes to execute the dragon he shot down the night prior, before ultimately putting the knife down.

Our first look at Toothless! Below is a shot showing the realism of Toothless in the live-action movie vs. the cartoony look in the original animated film.

As the live-action logo appears on the screen, the track “Test Drive,” composed by John Powell for the first film’s score, swells. Toothless can be seen in the “O” of the logo.

2025’s “How to Train Your Dragon” marks the firs- live action remake of a DreamWorks animated film. (We are not counting the “Shrek The Musical” proshot; I’m so sorry musical theatre fans.)
Isle of Berk at Epic Universe
If you leave the movie wishing you could see Toothless in real life, you sure can! Thanks to @bioreconstruct on X (formerly Twitter), we can see a Toothless animatronic on Hiccup’s Wing Gliders at Epic Universe. This will be a family-friendly roller coaster ride that lets you experience what it’s like to fly like a dragon. If you’re not a coaster person, there’s no need to fret! Hiccup and Toothless will also have a meet and greet in Isle of Berk.

If the movie really moved you, but you want to experience it live on stage, Epic Universe will also be home to “The Untrainable Dragon.” This is a live stage show with life-size dragons, stunts, and musical numbers. You will soar through the clouds with Hiccup and Toothless as the show takes you through when they meet, to their first flight.
