Each year, 100 Black high school students and teens from underrepresented communities are awarded a trip to Walt Disney World Resort to experience Disney Dreamers Academy, a program established in 2008 to inspire young leaders through personalized support for themselves, their caregivers, and their community. For the program’s 15th milestone year, Grammy Award-winning artist Kelly Rowland will serve as 2022 Disney Dreamers Academy ambassador from March 3-6, 2022, in Orlando.
Rowland, a four-time Grammy award-winning singer, songwriter, actress, and television executive producer, is among the many celebrities participating in the educational mentorship program created and hosted by Walt Disney World Resort. During the event, Rowland will share personal insights from her own experience as a teenager in Destiny’s Child, one of the best-selling female musical groups of all time.
“Mentorship is an experience I treasure, and the opportunity to invest my time into these students is incredible,” Rowland said. “I’m excited to work with them and watch how they grow throughout the program.”
During the four-day event, Rowland will be joined by other celebrities, including fashion designer Kerby Jean-Raymond, gospel artist Kierra Sheard and R&B recording artist Mali Music (both of whom recently appeared at Disneyland’s “Celebrate Gospel” event), actress Faithe Herman (“This Is Us”), and actress Demi Singleton, who starred in Disney’s “The Lion King on Broadway” and also played tennis star Serena Williams in the Oscar-nominated film, “King Richard.”
The Disney Dreamers will also have the opportunity to participate in educational sessions for leadership skills, communication techniques, and networking strategies, as well as in-depth career workshops to introduce career paths in business, entertainment, and sciences, including careers within The Walt Disney Company.
Over its 15 years, Disney Dreamers Academy has inspired more than 1,300 students from across the country, with program graduates becoming doctors, engineers, performing artists, entrepreneurs, and more. Some have even become mentors to the Disney Dreamers who followed them.
“The Disney Dreamers Academy program is an important part of Disney’s commitment to supporting diverse communities, such as Black America, by encouraging the next generation to think big and to carry what they learn with them back home, so they can relentlessly pursue their dreams and make a difference in the lives of others,” wrote Walt Disney World Sports Media Director Darrell Fry in the Disney Parks Blog.
