With Formula 1 racing more popular than ever, the May 12, 2022 opening of the Carlsbad park’s uniquely Ferrari-themed offering is extremely timely for the sport’s growing fan base, as well as Lego devotees everywhere.

The new attraction puts visitors in the driver’s seat with innovative digital technology that is a first for any Legoland park worldwide. It allows guests to build, test, and race their own Lego Ferrari, drawing inspiration from the legendary Italian team’s fun facts, race history, and awards featured in the mock-up F1 “garage.”

Legoland California President Kurt Stocks insisted, “Kicking off what is anticipated to be one of the biggest vacation seasons to date, we are thrilled to bring this first-of-its-kind attraction to Carlsbad, California.

“On the heels of Miami’s Grand Prix, we know what a thrill the Formula 1 races can be, and we’re excited to give our guests a taste of that experience here at the park.”

The centerpiece of the attraction is a life-size, bright red Ferrari F40 model developed specifically by the Lego Group, and the only model of its kind in the world. It took a team of Master Model builders more than 3,800 hours and 350,000 LEGO elements to create.

At 14 feet long, six-and-a-half feet wide, and four feet tall, it weighs in at more than 3,000 pounds and is a permanent, visual highlight of the new area, with guests able to sit in the model and have their photo taken.

For young racers, the experience starts in the build and test area where they can construct their own Lego Ferrari car to race on one of three test tracks, which each include a test zone, steering test, and speed test. Each track features different obstacles, challenges, and a chance to clock the fastest time.

Every car is customizable, from its engine size and tire specifications down to personalized license plates and even stickers.

Once fine-tuned, the cars head into the race area itself, where the specially-created digital technology takes over. Here, cars are digitally scanned and able to take part in a virtual race in a bid to capture the fastest lap time.

Guests will have three laps to grab that all-important time using touchpads to provide extra acceleration and overtaking opportunities, while their families can join in the fun by viewing overhead monitors with a bird’s eye view of the action.

There is more excitement in store in the Duplo Build Zone, where younger visitors can design their own creations out of bigger bricks, with a Lego pit crewmember on hand to highlight the Ferrari heritage and showcase themed Lego race gear and awards.

The Lego Ferrari Build & Race is now open and is included with regular park admission. For more information on the park and its Ferrari creation, visit LegolandCalifornia.com.
