Many events scheduled through the summer at Bok Tower Gardens

This summer through September, Bok Tower Gardens has a slew of events planned for your enjoyment. The National Historic Landmark, located about 50 miles southeast of Orlando, near Lake Wales, has been voted Florida’s Best Garden.

Through Sept. 29 —Student Art Exhibit: “Emerging Environmentalists”

McLaughlin Middle School and Fine Arts Academy student artwork features mixed media and digital graphics.

Through Aug. 31 – Kids’ Photography Contest
Budding photographers are invited to submit their photos taken at Bok Tower Gardens. Upload photos with titles to www.boktowergardens.org/contest.

Through July 27 — Discovery Days: Up, Up and Away!
Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., children ages 5 to 12 are invited to build and fly a kite as they learn how scientists use kites to study our natural world. $10 per class or $55 for all six classes. Ridge Explorations: Nature Conservancy
Every Friday from 10 a.m. to noon, environmental organizations will offer demonstrations, materials and activities in the Visitor Center to showcase the unique ecosystem of the Lake Wales Ridge and conservation efforts. Free with admission to the Gardens.

Discovery Days: Happy Habitats
Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., the secret lives of frogs and toads will be revealed as children ages 5-12 discover the happy habitats that house our hoppy friends. $10 per class, with one free adult admission per registered child. July 6 through 27 — Discovery Days: Set Sail at the Tower!
Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., make your own boat to float in the moat! Children ages 5 to 12 will learn about the exciting and dangerous journeys scientists have made while exploring our oceans and rivers and then test their own sailing skills. $10 per class, with one free adult admission per registered child. July 7 through Aug. 28 — Summer Film Series
Every Thursday at 10:30 a.m., family-friendly nature films will be shown in the Visitor Center. Free with regular admission and continuing through.

July 13 through 27 — Discovery Days: Edible Wonders!
Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., children ages 5 to 12 will uncover the secrets fruits and vegetables we eat have to tell us about where they come from, how they grew and what part humans eat every day. $10 per class, with one free adult admission per registered child. July 20 — Discovery Days: Busy Bees!
Wednesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., discover how busy those bees really are as children ages 5-12 explore the inside of a beehive, enter a honey tasting challenge and make their own beeswax candle. $10 per class, with one free adult admission per registered child. July 27 — Discovery Days: Seeds & Weeds!
Wednesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., children ages 5-12 will discover seed shapes, sizes and colors as they learn the difference between a watermelon and tomato seed. $10 per class, with one free adult admission per registered child. July 23 – Live at the Gardens Summer Music Series: The Repeatles
Back by popular demand, The Repeatles will perform Beatles songs guaranteed to entertain audiences of all ages at 7:30 p.m. Individual concert tickets are $20 with a 10 percent discount for members. August 2011

Aug. 3 — Plein Air Days
Artists are invited to paint, draw and create in the Gardens free of charge. Children 12 and under will receive a free watercolor kit at the Visitor Center.

Aug. 4 through 18 — Summer Film Series
Every Thursday at 10:30 a.m., family-friendly nature films will be shown in the Visitor Center theater. Free with regular admission.

Aug. 6 — Dog Day of Summer
Leashed and friendly dogs are invited to visit the Gardens for one special day. Judges will select the cutest, most unusual, owner look-a-like, most talented and best kisser. Dog grooming tips, health, safety, and adoption information will be available from 9 a.m. to noon along with Ask a Vet, training specialists and doggie boutique items for sale. Dog admission includes a doggie gift bag. All dogs must be on a leash and owners must dispose of pet waste. Dog admission is $5 per dog, with 50 percent of the proceeds going to the Humane Society of Polk County. Regular human admission rates apply.

September 2011

Sept. 10 – “It Matters What You Grow” Dirt Days Series: Bog Gardens
Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m., children ages 6-12 (accompanied by an adult) are invited to explore a bog garden at Window By the Pond and investigate how plants survive in this unique environment. Free admission with four stamps on a Trek Ten Trails card. Call Glenda Mink at 863-534-4340 for reservations or more information.

Sept. 11 — National Grandparents Day
Free admission will be offered to all grandparents.

Sept. 24 — Live at the Gardens Summer Music Series: Brazilian Nights with Victoria de Lissovoy Jazz Sextet

Victoria de Lissovoy returns for an evening of Samba jazz and bossa nova at 7:30 p.m. Individual concert tickets are $20 with a 10 percent discount for members. Early reservations are encouraged. Purchase tickets online at www.boktowergardens.org or call 863-676-1408.

 

Bok Tower Gardens is open every day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with tickets priced at $10 for adults and $3 for children 5 to 12.
