The news was shared earlier today at the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) Expo by Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products.

Imagineers are hard at work to create new experiences for families and young children to enjoy together inside Disneyland park. Mickey’s Toontown will transform into a “symphony of sights, sounds, and sensations” with new play experiences and open, grassy play spaces. The land will also receive new landscaping for both spontaneous family play and parental relaxation.

‘We are so excited to leverage Disney’s powerful brand, develop new stories and share even more magical experiences with our guests,” said D’Amaro. “The newly reimagined Mickey’s Toontown will be a welcoming place where families and younger guests can connect and play together in fun new ways.”

The updated Mickey’s Toontown will offer more play activities and experiences than ever before, with active and tactile play spaces that will let kids slide, spin, splash, touch, and listen.

One of the new areas coming to the land will be CenTOONial Park, the first space guests will encounter upon entering. This natural space will be anchored by two interactive play exeperiences.

The first, a fountain designed for play, will be located at the center of CenTOONial Park and will become a center icon for Mickey’s Toontown. At its base, water tables will invite guests to play with the water and have a sensory experience. At night, the fountain will be brought to life in a unique spectacle.

The other will be a nearby “dreamign tree,” inspired by the tree that a young Walt Disney would daydream under in his hometown. Sculpted tree roots will offer kids the opportunity to play, crawl and explore, and undulating topography will offer plenty of rolling hills to sit and do some dreaming of their own.

In addition to reopening in 2023 with the new Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, Mickey’s Toontown will still be home to characters like Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck and more.

To prepare for the refurbishment, Mickey’s Toontown will close in March 2022 so construction can begin.

  1. I really hope they keep Cartoon Spin in some form or fashion. It’s still such a unique dark ride… I still remember when they posted information about putting one of the Tea Cups on a track, and working out how that would all work, with the spinning and all, lol. It’s become a classic to me, after so many years it’s been operating, so why not keep it?
