‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ is stressful, emotional, amazing | Movie review

“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” is everything I could have wanted and more. I cried, I cheered, and I held my breath. It takes the typical “Mission: Impossible” stakes and amplifies them by 1,000 with two MASSIVE set pieces, making this mission the most stressful to date.

Anyone who knows me knows my love for Tom Cruise. It’s not about his looks or his beliefs, it’s about his passion — specifically, his passion for movies and the theater experience. Growing up with a reading disorder, movies became my outlet. I struggled with books, but films gave me a way to connect with stories. I’d beg my parents every week to take me to the theater, often to movies they’d never even heard of. Movies gave me an escape, and no one consistently makes movies with audiences in mind quite like Tom Cruise.

“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” is a full theatrical experience. I’m not sure how you watch it and not find something to enjoy. It’s a culmination of 30 years of movies, and boy, does it feel like a crescendo.

The set pieces in “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” are absolutely jaw-dropping. We’ve seen Ethan and the team face intense situations before, but this film takes the tension to another level. It’s the kind that makes your palms sweat. It’s remarkable how even knowing Tom Cruise performed all the stunts himself and came out unharmed, you still feel the stakes, not just within the story, but in the physicality of the stunts themselves. The two major sequences — the underwater scene and the biplane sequence — are both incredible, each delivering a completely different kind of thrill.

My only issue with this film is that early on they treat the audience as if they’ve never seen a “Mission: Impossible” movie before. The first 30-40 minutes of the movie hold your hand through what has led us to “The Final Reckoning.” I feel each “Mission” film is easily watchable with no prior context. This might be the only one that requires an entire rewatch to fully get the most out of it.

I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome for “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.” I can’t wait to run back to an IMAX theater to see it again.

SCORE: “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” 4.5/5

“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”  is rated PG-13 and is now in theaters! There is no post-credit scene.
