“Arthur the King” doesn’t hesitate to rip your heart out, despite already knowing the inspirational story, so be sure to bring tissues.

When Michael Light races his final Adventure Racing World Championship, his team is pushed to the outer limits of endurance, all while a dog named Arthur comes along for the ride.

Despite my prior knowledge of the central narrative, “Arthur the King” exceeded my expectations. It weaved a compelling story that resonated deeply and entertained me from start to finish while ripping my heart out in true “dog movie” fashion.

“Arthur the King” doesn’t take many risks. Similar to “Lone Survivor” or “Patriots Day,” it is a run-of-the-mill Mark Wahlberg biopic. The only difference this time, is it’s about a man and his dog. The inclusion of Simu Liu (“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings“) injects a refreshing energy into the narrative, and his portrayal of a charming yet conflicted character adds layers to the story, offering a compelling counterbalance to the central bond between man and dog.

However, “Arthur the King” isn’t without its flaws. The heavy reliance on CGI during intense sequences sometimes detracts from the film’s overall impact, leading to moments of unintended laughter from the audience. Despite this, the cast’s impressive athleticism and commitment to their roles shine through, lending authenticity to the adrenaline-fueled adventure.

Ultimately, “Arthur the King” delivers a powerful film experience that resonates long after the credits roll. Fans of inspirational sports films will find themselves caught by its emotional depth and action. Be sure to grab your tissues and prepare for a roller coaster of emotions.

 SCORE: 3.5/5

Arthur the King” is rated PG-13 and is in theaters now. There are no post-credit scenes.
