Movie Review: ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,’ a pleasant surprise

“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” might have a convoluted plot, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have a good time.

With the Spengler family back in New York, they must take being Ghostbusters to a whole new level when an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force.

I grew up admiring the Ghostbusters, but never quite felt the intense emotional bond some people do. Don’t get it twisted, I’m still a fan. I just don’t have an emotional attachment to the franchise. When going to see “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” in 2021, I remember walking in very skeptical, especially after the 2016 remake. But walking out of “Afterlife,” I was thoroughly surprised. Fast forward to “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” and skepticism once again reared its head, fueled by the change in directors. However, as the credits rolled, I found myself pleasantly stunned by the sheer enjoyment the film brought me.

At the heart of “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” was its impeccable casting. You have Paul Rudd, who is as likable as any actor working today. But they also cast two of the best young actors working today in Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace. The central story around “Afterlife,” is based on them, and without them, the film would fall flat. Similarly, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” shines with its spotlight on the Spengler siblings, with Mckenna Grace’s Phoebe taking center stage, supported by Finn Wolfhard’s Trevor in a more subdued role that still resonates.

The debate surrounding “requels” often hinges on their treatment of nostalgia. “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” delicately balances homage with innovation, paying respectful tribute to its predecessors. It teeters towards nostalgia overload, with a barrage of callbacks and cameos that occasionally verge on overwhelming, but it truly makes up for all that with the story centered around Phoebe Spengler. The film’s an incredibly witty comedy and features an impressive use of practical effects.

Due to the massive amount of nostalgia in this film, the plot of the main antagonist takes a back seat. Most of the story around this ancient evil spirit is explained in a five-minute scene of straight exposition. On top of that, there was one new character that had an arch that I just couldn’t get into. If they had taken them out of the film, I wouldn’t have even noticed. Which stinks because the character is played by an actor I’m very fond of.

“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” is a blast from start to finish. The comedy lands incredibly well and more often than its predecessors. If you’re looking for a fun family film with a little on the spooky side, this is the perfect film for you.

“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” is rated PG-13 and releases March 22, 2024! There is one post-credit scene.

SCORE: 3/5
