(Movie review) “The Mandalorian and Grogu” is worth seeing, but don’t expect much

I’m not the first or last you’ll hear say “The Mandalorian and Grogu” movie is like a few episodes of the Disney+ series strung together. While that is true, it’s still worth seeing on the big screen. If you love The Mandalorian and his sidekick/child Grogu in action, it’s even better in a theater. I screened it in IMAX, which can be worth your time and money.

This movie review does not contain any major spoilers.

In this special episode, sorry, movie, The Mandalorian is doing what he does best, hunting down criminals for the New Republic. He is led by a new character played by Sigourney Weaver. Mando not only has Grogu along, but as seen in some of the most recent episodes of “The Mandalorian” Disney+ series, he’s also teaming up with Zeb, a character from the “Rebels” animated series. For Star Wars fans who’ve watched “Rebels” Zeb is a special character, one that is now in live action form.

My main issue with the movie is that it seems like another season of the show. The stakes are not high, and nothing major happens during the movie that seems truly movie-worthy. It’s an enjoyable movie, though.

Perhaps the movie theater merchandise for “The Mandalorian and Grogu” will help contribute to the success of this box office release.

If you’re okay with a few details about the plot and storyline, keep reading.

A few movie plot details

A member of the reforming Empire wants to bring Mando in, but he’ll have to help Jabba the Hutt’s twin brother and sister as they aim to find and bring back Jabba’s son Rotta, which isn’t as simple as it seems.

The movie is one action-packed scene after another. If you like seeing Mando take down bad guys, Stormtroopers, and some evil-looking creatures, you won’t be disappointed.

The stakes just aren’t high enough. There are no huge reveals, we learn nothing about Grogu that we didn’t already know, and there are no surprise appearances. The series episode with Luke Skywalker comes to mind as way more exciting than anything in the movie. I wanted to see something on that level. Nothing really advances the overarching story of Mandalorian and Grogu.

But I can’t complain about seeing a really great story with two of my favorite Star Wars characters on the big screen. If you’re a big Mandalorian fan, go see it. If you’re more of a casual Star Wars fan, wait for it to come to Disney+.

“The Mandalorian and Grogu” is rated PG-13 and runs two hours and twelve minutes. There are no end credits scenes.

In The Parks

To experience characters from the movie, head to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios or Disneyland Park. You can meet both title characters at each, and they will both also be added to the ‘Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run‘ ride in just a few days.

Watch the new pre-show of the new version of the ride in our YouTube video below.

You may also get lucky and meet the BDX droids in the parks. They have a couple of small cameos in the background of the movie.  This is the first time a Star Wars character made for the theme parks has appeared on screen.

There is one other theme park reference that has nothing to do with Star Wars that you may see in the background of one scene, but I won’t spoil it. Message me if you really want to know. And with that, let the summer blockbuster movie season begin!
