A new era of Star Wars approaches with ‘The High Republic’
Later this year, Lucasfilm will launch the next era of Star Wars with “The High Republic,” a new campaign that focuses on publishing.
UPDATE – 05/26/20: Lucasfilm has announced that the launch of Star Wars: The High Republic has been delayed due to “general marketplace delays,” likely as a result of COVID-19.
Both Charles Soule’s adult novel “Star Wars: The High Republic: Light of the Jedi” and Justina Ireland’s middle grade novel, “Star Wars: The High Republic: A Test of Courage” will both now release on Jan. 5, 2021. Claudia Gray’s young adult novel, “Star Wars: The High Republic: Into the Dark” has moved to a new release date of Feb. 2, 2021.
New release dates for Marvel’s “Star Wars: The High Republic” series and IDW Publishing’s “Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures” series will be released at a later date.
Michael Siglain, creative director for Lucasfilm Publishing, shared this letter with StarWars.com about the change in release dates:
Previously referred to as “Project Luminous,” Star Wars: The High Republic will feature adult and young adult novels, children’s books, and comics from publishers like Disney Lucasfilm Press, Del Rey, IDW Publishing, and Marvel.
This new age of storytelling will be set about 200 years before the events of “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace,” when the Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic are at their most powerful. This period of the Star Wars timeline does not overlap with any of the feature films or television series currently in development.
“We are so excited to be opening up such a rich, fertile era for our authors to explore,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “We’ll get to see the Jedi in their prime.”
Authors working on this new initiative are Claudia Gray, Justina Ireland, Daniel José Older, Cavan Scott, and Charles Soule.
The first novels and comics will debut at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim this August. The first wave of stories include:
- “Star Wars: The High Republic: Into the Dark” by Claudia Gray (Young Adult novel, Disney Lucasfilm Press)
- “Star Wars: The High Republic: A Test of Courage” by Justina Ireland (Middle Grade novel, Disney Lucasfilm Press)
- “Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures” by Daniel José Older (IDW Publishing comic book series)
- “Star Wars: The High Republic” by Cavan Scott (Marvel comics book series)
- “Star Wars: The High Republic: Light of the Jedi” by Charlies Soule (Adult Novel, Del Rey)
