It’s a Wonderful Life Festival in the ‘real’ Bedford Falls

Bedford Falls from the classic Christmas movie “It’s a Wonderful Life” comes to life each holiday season in Seneca Falls, N.Y. After years on my bucket list, I finally made it to Seneca Falls this December for an unforgettable weekend during the It’s a Wonderful Life Festival 2025.

Did Seneca Falls inspire Bedford Falls from ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’?

Seneca Falls calls itself “The Real Bedford Falls,” as it is widely thought to be the inspiration for Bedford Falls in “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Although there is no proof of this, there is quite a bit of circumstantial evidence.

There is a story involving a Seneca Falls barber who gave film director Frank Capra a haircut on his way through town during the time “It’s a Wonderful Life” would have been in development. Additionally, the bridge in Seneca Falls looks just like the one in the film, and the scene that takes place there isn’t in the film’s original source material, the short story “The Greatest Gift.”

There are also geographical mentions in the film surrounding Seneca Falls, N.Y., similar architecture in the main street buildings and homes, some real-world happenings that parallel story points in the film, and more. Could it all be coincidence? Perhaps. But many have accepted Seneca Falls as the true inspiration for Bedford Falls.

A plaque reads: The Village of Seneca Falls may have inspired the hometown look of Frank Capra’s 1946 holiday film classic “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Mr. Capra is known to have visited her in the mid-1940’s [sic] at the time the screenplay for the film was being developed. Many similarities exist between Seneca Falls and the fictional “Bedford Falls.” Among these are the design of the Bridge Street bridge, the use of several place and personal names, and the village’s geographical location.

It’s a Wonderful Life Festival in ‘The Real Bedford Falls’

Whether or not Seneca Falls was the true inspiration for Bedford Falls in “It’s a Wonderful Life,” I can tell you one thing based on my personal experiences there: It certainly feels like Bedford Falls during this festive weekend, which takes place the second weekend in December each year. There are plenty of activities to put you in the old-time Christmas mood. But it’s also the people living in Bedford Falls who welcome all with such pride in their town.

I pulled into Seneca Falls just as the sun was setting on a Friday night. The main street, named Fall Street, had garland and lights strung above the road, with lit angel and bell decorations fitting to the theme of the film attached to the light poles. A chill in the air and consistent snow flurry made for a picturesque holiday getaway.

Seneca Falls features a year-round It’s a Wonderful Life Museum celebrating the history of the film and its far-reaching message of the importance of every individual. The museum is deeply involved in the creation of the It’s a Wonderful Life Festival.

The museum is currently in a temporary location as its main location down the street is being completely refurbished with the hope of opening in time for the film’s 80th anniversary in 2026.

Upon entering the museum gift shop, I was greeted by a woman who encompasses the spirit of “It’s a Wonderful Life,” Debbie. She is one of the most welcoming people I’ve ever met and clearly loves the movie and where she lives. Debbie became my touchpoint each morning. I went in to greet her and ring the bell at the exit as she thanked me for giving an angel their wings.

My schedule for the weekend was jam-packed, and I didn’t even come close to doing it all. For a small town where the festival only takes up a couple of blocks, they pack in a lot of offerings. It felt like getting ready for a convention weekend, hopping from one panel or offering to another.

Giving the event a sense of legitimacy are the living cast members from the film who take part in the weekend. A number of the Bailey children, including Karolyn Grimes (Zuzu), Jimmy Hawkins (Tommy), and more offer autograph and photo sessions as well as live presentations.

Also in attendance for 2025 was the granddaughter of director Frank Capra, Monica Capra Hodges. She shared family photos and memories of growing up with her grandfather. Although her memory of him is primarily as “Grandpa” and not so much a filmmaker, she continues sharing his stories and allowing his legacy to live on.

One of my favorite, admittedly nerdy, opportunities during the weekend was how the Seneca Falls post office offers a Bedford Falls postmark. It’s the perfect place to mail your Christmas cards from for a uniquely themed postmark for all recipients to enjoy. The first thing I did when I arrived for the weekend was attend a Christmas card-making class and mailed those off with the special postmark.

Los Angeles-based actor Brian Rohan is hired for the event each year to portray Hollywood star Jimmy Stewart and his iconic “It’s a Wonderful Life” character, George Bailey. Rohan had numerous wardrobe changes throughout the weekend to fit whichever photo op he was taking part in.

Additionally, Rohan performs a one-man show entitled “Jimmy Stewart on the Front of Life” where he portrays Stewart after his return from the military, not so sure whether or not he’s an actor anymore. In addition to being beautifully performed by Rohan, he also wrote the stage play based on his immense research into Stewart’s life.

In addition to many panels, performances, dining parties, and opportunities to screen the movie and related to content, the It’s a Wonderful Life Festival is full of small-town offerings. Some of my favorites included a horse-drawn wagon ride and bonfire gathering.

The busiest day of the event was the Saturday where guests showed up for It’s a Wonderful Parade, marching down Fall Street with local performers and a float competition. Equally as popular was the It’s a Wonderful Run 5K marathon, where many participants dressed in holiday costumes and wardrobe.

After a full picturesque weekend, I wrapped things up by listening to the Ringing of the Bells from a nearby church, honoring lives that made an impact, before hopping into a warm car to depart Bedford Falls.

If I had to choose one word to describe my visit to The Real Bedford Falls, I would say “charming.” Perhaps it’s not the most polished festival you’ll attend, but everything I witnessed felt like it was done with the best of intentions.

I certainly enjoyed my time there and hope to revisit in the future. Most festival activities are within walking distance of a couple blocks and very affordable, if not free. When I needed to hop in my car to visit a new location, I was charmed by the surrounding homes’ holiday decorations. It felt like stepping back in time a bit and it was simply a breath of fresh air.

Planning is already underway for the 2026 festival, celebrating the “It’s a Wonderful Life” 80th anniversary. The festival will take place Dec. 9-13, 2026, in Seneca Falls, N.Y. Learn more at TheRealBedfordFalls.com or visit the museum any time of the year at WonerfulLifeMuseum.com.
