I live 30 minutes from Halloween Horror Nights. Here’s why I still like staying on-site

Staying at a Universal Orlando hotel for Halloween Horror Nights isn’t absolutely necessary in order to enjoy the event, but after experiencing HHN both ways, I’ve found that the benefits extend beyond avoiding the drive home or somewhere off-site.

The benefits of staying at a Universal Orlando hotel for HHN

There are plenty of reasons to stay at a Universal Orlando hotel during a theme park vacation, but Halloween Horror Nights comes with a few benefits of its own.

Some are tangible perks reserved for hotel guests. Others are simply conveniences that become much more noticeable after spending hours walking through haunted houses and scare zones.

A dedicated entrance for hotel guests

One of the easiest benefits to take advantage of doesn’t happen at the hotel at all.

Universal Orlando hotel guests have access to a dedicated Halloween Horror Nights entrance during a limited window each event night. For our 2026 visit, the entrance was available from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and located on the far left side of the main entrance to Universal Studios Florida.

We didn’t arrive until about 7:25 p.m., just minutes before the hotel entrance was scheduled to close. It was still a breeze. While crowds were making their way through the primary entrance, we had a much less congested route into the park. It may not save the same amount of time every night, but on our visit, it was one of the easiest hotel benefits.

Getting back to the hotel is part of the perks

Transportation was also where I noticed the biggest difference between my stays at Cabana Bay and Royal Pacific.

Cabana Bay is the less expensive option, and complimentary buses transport guests between the hotel and Universal CityWalk. They worked fine during my stay, but the buses did not feel as frequent as the water taxis I used while staying at Royal Pacific.

The boat was an upgrade I hadn’t fully appreciated until I used it during Halloween Horror Nights. After hours inside a crowded theme park, getting outside, sitting down and feeling the breeze during a short boat ride back to the hotel was genuinely refreshing.

In addition to Royal Pacific, water taxi transportation is available from Hard Rock Hotel, Loews Portofino Bay Hotel and Loews Sapphire Falls Resort. For guests considering an HHN hotel primarily for the convenience at the end of the night, the boats are a benefit worth factoring into the price difference.

Halloween continues at the hotels

Staying on-site also means the Halloween experience doesn’t necessarily stop when you leave Universal Studios Florida.

Both Cabana Bay and Royal Pacific have offered Halloween-themed bar experiences during my stays. At Royal Pacific in 2026, Universal Monsters Laguna Lounge is a new tropical gathering place for some familiar Universal Monsters.

These experiences don’t require an entire night of their own, which worked particularly well during my short stays. I could stop in for a themed drink and explore the decorations for a few moments.

The hotel experiences add something Halloween-related to do without it being a full-night commitment.

The HHN Keyholder Bar

There’s another hotel benefit waiting inside Halloween Horror Nights that is easy to overlook based on its name.

The HHN Keyholder Bar is open to eligible Universal Orlando annual passholders, but Universal hotel guests can also access the location during the event. It’s near the front of the park and generally less crowded than some of the other pop-up bars during the event.

The biggest benefit comes when the night is over

Neither of my Universal hotel stays was a traditional vacation. Both were hosted media visits in the middle of the workweek, with scheduled media experiences.

There was no leisurely resort day afterward. I essentially checked in, worked, experienced the Halloween offerings, slept and got up to head home the next morning.

Still, after hours of walking through Universal Studios Florida, navigating crowds and squeezing in as many houses as possible, knowing that my room was only a short bus or boat ride away is a luxury I am becoming accustomed to.

Cabana Bay remains appealing for its lower price point while still providing the HHN benefits that come with staying at a Universal hotel. But after experiencing Royal Pacific, I admit I’m spoiled by the water taxi.

There is something special about ending a night of fog, screams and thousands of other people by stepping onto a boat, getting some fresh air and feeling the breeze for a few minutes before heading upstairs to bed.

The scares may be the reason to visit HHN, but a short ride back to bed is a pretty good way to survive the night.
