SeaWorld San Diego upgrades ‘Shark Encounter’ with immersive environment and walk-through tunnel
SeaWorld San Diego is set to debut its reimagined ‘Shark Encounter’ on May 22, giving guests a dramatic new way to experience one of the ocean’s most fascinating predators.

The reimagined attraction combines education, conservation, and high-impact visuals in an experience designed to immerse visitors from the moment they enter.
The updated habitat begins with a coastal-themed entry and surface-level shark viewing area, where guests can observe the animals from above while learning more about their behaviors, habitats, and importance to ocean ecosystems.

New shark tunnel and up-close experiences
The signature feature of the revamped ‘Shark Encounter‘ is a moving walk-through tunnel that carries guests beneath the habitat, creating a 180-degree underwater perspective as sharks glide overhead. The experience concludes at a floor-to-ceiling viewing wall enhanced with LED multimedia elements that help tell the story of sharks and their role in the wild.
Guests looking for an upgraded experience can also purchase the ‘Shark Up Close Experience,’ which offers a behind-the-scenes look at animal care and the opportunity to safely feed sharks over the water.
SeaWorld says the new exhibit will feature eleven shark species, including sand tiger sharks, blacktip reef sharks, and the endangered Australian leopard shark.
“The all-new Shark Encounter is an awe-inspiring experience that brings guests face-to-face with some of the ocean’s most powerful and misunderstood predators,” said Tyler Carter, SeaWorld San Diego park president. “From above-water viewing to the immersive shark tunnel, this dynamic habitat offers a deeper appreciation for these incredible animals while reinforcing our commitment to marine education, conservation, and inspiring the next generation of ocean advocates.”

More summer additions
The enhanced ‘Shark Encounter’ joins a growing line up of summer enhancements at SeaWorld San Diego. This theme park is currently testing for a new nighttime drone show.
Compared to SeaWorld Orlando’s Shark Encounter
As an Orlandoan, I have to admit I’m a little jealous. SeaWorld Orlando has had a shark encounter attraction that guests have loved for decades, and my son has always enjoyed visiting it over the years. As a parent, I’ve also loved that strollers and drinks are allowed inside, making it one of the best indoor breaks on a hot Florida day. I would love to see SeaWorld Orlando’s ‘Shark Encounter’ get some upgrades, but it is still a great exhibit, anyhow.
San Diego’s version will begin at a newly redesigned entrance surrounded by lush greenery that opens into a colorful coastal beach setting. From there, guests can watch sharks from above while exploring educational displays, photo spots, and interactive elements focused on shark behavior, habitats, and conservation efforts.

As visitors continue through the winding attraction, the scenery shifts from shoreline to open ocean, creating an underwater world where sharks glide overhead in a striking new perspective.
San Diego’s brand-new tunnel and upgraded surroundings look like an impressive next step for this classic SeaWorld experience.
