Wakanda’s tech-savvy princess returns in Marvel’s ‘Shuri #1’

by Brittani Tuttle

Marvel has announced that this fall, award-winning author Nnedi Okorafor and Eisner-nominated artist Leonardo Romero will be bringing Wakanda’s genius princess to life with “Shuri #1.”

Shuri is back and must face the challenges of the throne in Marvel’s latest comic.

In this issue, Wakanda is facing a great crisis: Black Panther is lost on a mission in space, and everyone is looking to Shuri to step up and lead the country in his absence. However, Shuri knows she’s happiest in a lab rather than on the throne, but how does a princess choose between her duty to her country and her own ideals?

“Shuri is an African young woman of genius level intelligence who is obsessed with technology and has traveled spiritually so far in the past that she’s seen Wakanda before it was Wakanda,” Okorafor said in an interview with Bustle. “The Ancestors call her Ancient Future. And she’s super ambitious. What do I love about her? All that and more. She’s a character in the Marvel Universe who really sings to me.”

Don’t miss out on Shuri’s adventures in “Shuri #1,” hitting comic book shelves this October. Check out the full cover art below:
