‘Superman in Concert’ at Walt Disney Concert Hall
Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California, continues its tradition of the extraordinary LA Phil playing some of the most iconic film scores live to picture. Recently, the 1978 Christopher Reeve starring film, “Superman”, got this epic treatment.

If you’ve never attended one of these concerts, it truly is a unique experience. It’s the closest you’ll come to feeling energy similar to a movie premiere. That is quite a feat for a film made 46 years ago.
In a world where more and more people are streaming movies, even first run films, from the comfort of their homes, there’s something nostalgic about watching a film with a passionate crowd. As cast and creators names are projected on the screen, the audience responded with thunderous applause. One particular name to get a loud reaction was the film’s music composer, John Williams.

The orchestra was conducted by Thomas Wilkins, Principal Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. The guests in attendance for concerts of this kind are typically huge fans of the film or music, and often both. Getting all those like-minded people in the same room creates a special mood. Add the live music of the LA Phil, and it’s something truly special.
It’s hard to believe the orchestra is playing live as it sounds just as good as it would if you were watching a perfectly mixed orchestra on film. Sometimes you even forget the orchestra is there when musical moments are simply supporting the action you’re seeing onscreen.
Then there are the fanfare moments. The times when the iconic film score is played with such pride that you can’t help but get chills throughout your body. The instantly recognizable Superman fanfare and flying themes share plenty of those moments throughout the film.
In addition to watching the orchestra and film, Walt Disney Concert Hall offered other entertainment offerings before the screening. This is a typical, free perk that comes with your ticket for numerous Walt Disney Concert Hall concerts.
One hour before “Superman” began, Upbeat Live with Mike Matessino took place in BP Hall, part of the Walt Disney Concert Hall lobby. There, guests were guided through the evenings music and questions from the audience were answered. There were even some cast members in attendance.
In addition, Drinks in the Garden offered free drinks for attendees on the Walt Disney Concert Hall’s rooftop garden. These added perks give you a good reason to show up early before the show. You can find out whether these free add-ons are included for individual concerts on the Walt Disney Concert Hall website.
If you missed “Superman in Concert”, there are still plenty of opportunities to catch equally great concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Throughout 2024 and into 2025, there is the John Williams Spotlight Series. This includes “Star Wars in Concert” November 21-24, 2024.
