Wait, why is Universal Orlando selling Disney’s “Avengers: Doomsday” merchandise?
Merchandise promoting Marvel Studios’ upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday” has been spotted at Universal Orlando Resort’s Islands of Adventure, including Doctor Doom apparel, toys and accessories.

Yes, Universal Orlando is selling merchandise for a Disney-owned franchise. And while that might seem like a crossover worthy of the multiverse, there’s a decades-old agreement that explains why Marvel superheroes still have a home at Universal Orlando Resort.
Besides new merchandise, you can snack your way to doomsday with these Avengers: Doomsday food and snacks.

The assortment perhaps provides a taste of the doom that faces moviegoers come December 16, 2026.
Why can Universal Orlando sell Marvel merchandise if Disney owns Marvel?
The answer goes back to 1994, when Universal secured theme park rights to Marvel characters, years before Disney acquired Marvel Entertainment in 2009.
The agreement allows Universal Orlando to continue operating Marvel Super Hero Island, home to attractions including The Incredible Hulk Coaster, The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man and Doctor Doom’s Fearfall.

Universal’s agreement also gives it exclusive theme park rights east of the Mississippi River to certain Marvel characters and their associated superhero families. That restricts which characters Disney can feature in its Florida theme parks, although Disney can use characters not covered by Universal’s rights, including the Guardians of the Galaxy at Epcot.
For now, Doctor Doom has conquered more than the multiverse — he’s claimed a spot on the merchandise shelves at Universal Orlando.
