Nico, Makaio or Haruki? Help SeaWorld pick a name for their new baby boy whale

SeaWorld’s newest killer whale was born about three months ago on Oct. 9. It took a while for seaWorld to discover it was a boy. Now it’s time to name the not-so-little guy and they’d like your help.

Names to choose from include:
Nico – from the Greek name Nikos, meaning “victory of the people”
Makaio – Hawaiian for “a gift of God”
Haruki – Japanese in origin, it combines “sunlight,’ “radiance/shine” and “life” to mean “shining brightly”

You can vote through SeaWorld’s Facebook Page. The winning name will be announced on Jan. 4.

Here’s Kelly Flaherty Clark, director of animal training, talking about the name choices:

Here’s video from the day the whale was born.

  1. Makaio is the Hawaianized name for Matthew, from the Bible not “gift of God”. If you want the Hawaiian Name… Gift of God in Hawaiian is “Hemakanamaikalani”

Please do not use native Hawaiian language incorrectly.
