As Pollo Campero opens at Downtown Disney, let’s remember McDonald’s – Video/Photos

by

The Pollo Campero restaurant is opening today at Downtown Disney. Sharing the space are Fresh A-Peel and Babycakes NYC. This is a fitting time to take a look back at the McDonald’s restaurant that used to be here.

The Festival of the Masters also started today. A festival vendor who hadn’t been to Downtown Disney since last year’s event wasn’t too happy this morning at 10:50 a.m. “I ran all the way over here to get a McMuffin at McDonald’s before they switched over to lunch,” he said. “I don’t want no damn chicken.”

Pollo Campero features Latin-flavored chicken, Fresh A-Peel offers salads, wraps and all natural burgers and hot dogs and Babycakes NYC is a vegan bakery. We’ll have more about these restaurants after they get past their soft opening and hold their grand opening.

Most everyone knows what McDonald’s used to sell, as did the McMuffin loving vendor did. But it wasn’t the food that made the Downtown Disney McDonald’s memorable. It was the McDonald’s character statues outside, the large McDonald’s letters in the front, the colorful walls with the Happy Meal boxes on a conveyor belt inside, and just the fact that so many families spend a nice afternoon eating a inexpensive meal at Downtown Disney.

It’s not that they won’t also be able to do just that at Pollo Campero and Fresh A-Peel. But this was a very unique McDoanld’s, and we always miss what we don’t have anymore. So let’s take one last look back.

Here’s a video taken last February, not too long before McDonald’s closed, followed by some photos:

“…This was a very unique McDonalds”

Alas, lovers of the golden arches who seek unique experience in Orlando don’t have to fret much with this closing. 10 minutes away is that 24-hour freakin big McDonalds with the arcade and bistro on Sand Lake Rd. (You see the strangest people there after midnight) and less than two blocks away from that is an equally big 2-floored McDo featuring a big bistro.

But yes, dear Downtown Disney McDonalds, you will be missed

While I understand some people will miss it, I would say good riddance. It was a bit of an eyesore, glorifying fast food. McDonald’s used to have tie-ins with Disney (I still have the 4 park glasses from 2000) but Disney got out because of the menu that wasn’t very healthy.

This was another time. I am glad it is gone actually.
