Baby orangutan born at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay

A baby Bornean orangutan, belonging to an endangered species, was born at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay on April 13, 2024.

Endangered Bornean Orangutan

The newborn weighed 3 lbs., 4 oz. at birth. The baby’s mother, Luna, underwent a c-section and is currently in recovery.

The baby orangutan’s birth is part of the Tampa, Fla. theme park’s ongoing participation in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan. Bornean orangutans are critically endangered, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Where to See New Baby Orangutan at Busch Gardens

For the time being, Luna and her daughter remain in back-of-house areas. Guests can expect to see them in-person in the future.

Park guests can observe other orangutans in the Jungala section of Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. The park also offers a half-hour Orangutan Insider Tour, with prices starting at $30.

In other news of recent animal additions, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay welcomed a nine-year-old Sumatran tiger last year.
