Broadway star launches Black History Month at Walt Disney World

Broadway star (and Orlando, Fla. native) Michael James Scott kicked off the celebration for Black History Month at Walt Disney World Resort by serving as the grand marshal of the Festival of Fantasy Parade at Magic Kingdom.

Scott, who starred as Genie in Disney’s Broadway musical “Aladdin” – along with popular Disney characters – made their way down Main Street, U.S.A., to the tune of favorite Disney music.

While at Magic Kingdom, Scott met Disney cast members, posed for photos, and experienced signature attractions, including Pirates of the Caribbean, Jungle Cruise. and Haunted Mansion.

In honor of Black History Month, the entire resort is “Celebrating Soulfully” through music, art, and food throughout February and beyond.

Epcot International Festival of the Arts – The artwork of three Black artists can be viewed during the festival until Feb. 19, 2024, and Black performers will appear on stage at America Gardens Theatre on select nights during the festival’s Disney on Broadway Concert Series, including Michael James Scott (“Aladdin”) on Feb. 11, 12, 15, 18, and 19, 2024, and Bradley Gibson (“The Lion King”) on Feb. 10, 13, 14, 16, 17, and 19, 2024. Disney Springs Art Walk – The colorful murals created by Black artists that celebrate Black culture and expression are showcased at Disney Springs. Click here for details.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park – Guests can view a new creation by internationally renowned Nigerian American artist Victor Ekpuk, which explores historical narratives and the contemporary African diaspora. Guests can also learn how to replicate the animations of Floyd Norman, Disney’s first credited Black animator who helped animate characters from “The Jungle Book.”

“Cooking with Soul” Menu – Throughout Walt Disney World, guests can sample food and beverage items honoring Black heritage and culture and prepared by a diverse group of Walt Disney World chefs, including Country Fried Pork Steak with Herbed Gravy (from Sous Chefs Anthony Watson and Angie Thomas).

Character Meet & Greets – Guests can meet Princess Tiana from “The Princess and the Frog” at Magic Kingdom, Ariel from the live-action “The Little Mermaid’’ at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Asha from “Wish” at Epcot.
