Movie review: ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ brings the hype and more

Review: With fan service on the level of “Avengers: Endgame” and some of the best-shot action we’ve seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since “Captain America: The Winter Solider,” “Deadpool & Wolverine” will make you cheer, laugh, and cry.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” official synopsis: Wolverine is recovering from his injuries when he crosses paths with the loudmouth, Deadpool. They team up to defeat a common enemy.

Here’s our “Deadpool & Wolverine” review.

PRAISE BE, MARVEL JESUS, HE IS RISEN.

The hype I had walking to “Deadpool & Wolverine” was more than just about any movie since “Avatar: The Way of Water.” I grew up with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, and the first “Deadpool” movie came out around the time I was allowed to see rated-R movies. Without exaggerating too much, “Deadpool & Wolverine” is a culmination of my childhood. I wouldn’t be an MCU fan without my early love for the original “X-Men” and Fox-produced Marvel movies. Those films laid the groundwork for the comic book geek I am today.

For those unaware, it wasn’t until 2019 when Disney acquired 20th Century Fox (now called 20th Century Studios) that characters such as the X-Men and Fantastic Four could be used in MCU films. I couldn’t be happier to share that “Deadpool & Wolverine” is not only a great comic book film, but also an incredible love letter to the now-defunct Fox universe.

Ryan + Hugh + Shawn <3

Not enough can be said for the two main actors of this film, Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) and Hugh Jackman (Wolverine). They’ve shown such care and passion throughout the years in portraying these characters to make sure they do the roles justice. “Deadpool & Wolverine” is no different.

Something needs to be said, as well, about director Shawn Levy and how well of a job he does coming into a pre-established franchise (Deadpool) while also bringing in a character who already had a perfect ending (Wolverine, as capped off in 2017’s “Logan”). “Deadpool & Wolverine” has so much to it and not for a moment did I feel it did a disservice to ANY film that came before it.

The action of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

To that point, every “Deadpool” film has great action, and “Deadpool & Wolverine” cranks that action to 100. During every single action sequence — whether a long-awaited one-on-one or a massive set piece — I was locked in, smiling ear-to-ear. At the end of the day, that’s my biggest takeaway from “Deadpool & Wolverine”: it’s fun from start to finish. Not once during the screening did I get the urge to know what time it was, or think about anything else. Big moment after big moment, the film keeps you on your toes, making sure you feel like you can’t leave your seat.

Two areas for improvement

While “Deadpool & Wolverine” is one of my favorite movies of the year, there are two small things I’m not the happiest about: the use of characters from “Deadpool” films and the CGI.

This time around, a lot of the characters you’ve grown to love from the “Deadpool” films take a back seat. Peter (Rob Delaney), Colossus (Stefan Kapičić), Dopinder (Karan Soni), you name it, they never get a chance to truly be a part of this film. While this stinks, about 40 minutes into the movie you’ll probably forget they exist.

I wouldn’t say the CGI is terrible. At times, I didn’t notice it. Other times, in my head I thought, “The haters are going to eat that up.” That being said, I’m never one to judge a movie on its CGI because as long as it gets its point across, it won’t make or break the movie. The CGI in this, while sometimes cringy, does not take away from the absolute wild ride “Deadpool & Wolverine” is.

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ final score

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is a fantastic new entry into the Marvel universe and is likely to go down as one of the best. My best recommendation is to grab a massive popcorn and a massive soda, sit back, and enjoy. I am already itching to go see it again.

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ in theme parks

Guests will have a chance to encounter Deadpool for a limited time at both Avengers Campuses in Disney parks, starting July 24 at Walt Disney Studios in France and July 26 at Disney California Adventure. While we don’t know what he might say to you in passing, this new addition into Avengers Campus is a welcome one.
