Disney brings back the Sorcerer Mickey hat at Hollywood Studios (with a twist)
Sorcerer Mickey’s iconic hat is back at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, but not in the way longtime fans might remember.

A new version of the blue, star-covered cone has appeared above construction walls in Animation Courtyard, marking one of the first major visible elements of the park’s upcoming ‘Magic of Disney Animation‘ experience. While it instantly calls to mind the massive Sorcerer Hat that once stood at the center of the park, this version is part of a very different concept.
A familiar icon returns in a new location
The newly installed hat sits behind construction walls near ‘The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure,’ giving guests a peek at how the reimagined Animation Courtyard is coming together. Unlike the original Sorcerer Hat—which served as the park’s central icon from 2001 to 2015—this version is scaled and positioned within a themed environment rather than as the focal point of the park.

Inspired by the real Disney animation building
Disney previously confirmed that the new area will draw inspiration from the real Walt Disney Animation Studios building in Burbank, California, which famously features a Sorcerer Mickey hat as part of its architecture.
What this means for the new animation experience
Disney announced earlier this year that the former Star Wars Launch Bay building will be transformed into ‘The Magic of Disney Animation,’ set to open in late summer 2026. More importantly, before being Star Wars Launch Bay, and a variety of other uses, this building acted as the guest-facing gateway to an actual animation studio. Orlando had its own animation studio where feature animated films “Mulan,” “Lilo & Stitch,” and “Brother Bear,” were created.

Fittingly enough, Mulan is one of the characters that will have a meet-and-greet home inside this new attraction. Yesterday, April 13, 2026, while visiting Magic Kingdom with my son, we happened to stumble upon Mulan greeting guests near Town Square Theater. Perhaps she was rehearsing while her new home is being finished?

The surrounding courtyard area is expected to debut earlier, on May 26, as a reimagined space inspired by the Walt Disney Studios lot.
When complete, the experience is expected to include:
- Interactive character experiences in an “Off the Page” meet-and-greet area
- An Olaf-hosted drawing class
- An indoor play space inspired by Alice in Wonderland
Important note: while this area is under construction, there are obstructed walkways near ‘The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure.‘
For now, the appearance of the Sorcerer Mickey hat offers the clearest sign yet that the project is moving from concept to reality, and adds a nostalgic nod that longtime fans will instantly recognize.
