A ninth Disney Cruise Line vessel will set sail from Tokyo, Japan. The ship will be designed by Walt Disney Imagineering and owned and operated by Oriental Land Company (OLC), the same business relationship that has existed at Tokyo Disney Resort for over 40 years.

The new ship will sail “mainly short distance departing from and arriving at ports around Tokyo metropolitan area,” according to the OLC.

Captains Mickey and Minnie Mouse announced the venture July 9, 2024, along with (pictured below, from left) Kenji Yoshida (representative director, president, and COO of OLC), Yumiko Takano (representative director, chairperson, and CEO of OLC), Toshio Kagami (chair of the board of directors of OLC), Thomas Mazloum (president of Disney Signature Experiences), and Sharon Siskie (senior vice president of Disney Cruise Line.

OLC’s press release referenced an estimated launch date of “fiscal year 2028.” The Disney Parks Blog and Disney’s version of a press release mentioned “by early 2029.”

The Tokyo cruise ship will contain 1,250 staterooms and a crew of 1,500 cast members. The ship will be similar in scope to the Disney Wish (which launched in 2022), though no name or theming details for the new ship have been announced at this time.

“I am sincerely proud that Disney and Oriental Land will be able to work together to create a world-class cruise business in Japan,” said Takano. “Oriental Land will use their knowhow from the theme park business to continue pushing boundaries and provide family entertainment cruise experiences filled with inspiration and surprise.”

‘Ambitious’ season of expansion for Disney cruises

There are currently five ships in the Disney Cruise Line portfolio: the Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wish. Three additional ships — the Disney Treasure, Disney Adventure, and Disney Destiny — are currently in development. The newly announced Tokyo cruise ship will make for nine total in the fleet.

“Disney Cruise Line has ambitious plans to bring family vacations and Disney storytelling to more guests around the world than ever before,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences, on the Tokyo announcement.

Disney ships also travel to two privately owned destinations in The Bahamas: Disney Castaway Cay and the just-opened Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.
