It has been confirmed by Disney that the long-running Magic Kingdom nighttime parade, SpectroMagic, has been retired and won’t be returning.

SpectroMagic first debuted on Oct. 1, 1991, incorporating elaborate, brightly lit floats, a musical score, narration by Jiminy Cricket and many sound effects. The parade stopped performances on May 21, 1999 when the Main Street Electrical Parade made its return to the Magic Kingdom. After two years, SpectroMagic returned on April 2, 2001. It’s final performance was on June 5, 2010, replaced once again by the returning Main Street Electrical Parade, which is currently running.

Rumor has it that floats for Spectromagic have been destroyed but some parts from the parade may be kept for possible use in the future.

Here’s our video of the full parade as performed during its final year in 2010:

  1. “Confirmed by Disney” where? I’ve seen the rumors last week of CMs saying they were taking parts before it was put in he trash. Anything more official announced than that?

  2. Disney took poor care of the floats. The floats were stored under a tent. The floats were pretty much left out in the open to suffer the Florida weather. It got to the point where the rust inside the floats made the floats unusable.

  3. Im sorry, but where is the NEWS about that?
Not sure why u guys got the Spectromagic for the NEWS, since its not even at MK for years, and saying on the title “Spectromagic officially retired”, for the ones who dont know, they might think that this parade was still going on! Weird…

  4. Have to say when I first heard the rumors a while ago that Spectro was over for good, I was hoping they werent true. Much as though I love MSEP, Spectro was something more special, magical, just so much more.

  5. Oh no, I was really hoping they would bring it back 🙁 both parades are good I just prefer the music of spectromagic. Thanks for the video, great memories.

  6. I’ll miss it, mostly for the music (not for the creepy elf-type things). At least I can still listen to the music whenever I like!

Overall, I think the Main Street Electrical Parade is better, and has more history behind it, so as long as they don’t retire that, I’ll be happy! 🙂
