Dolly Parton’s ‘9 to 5’ returning to theaters for one week

Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5” is returning to theaters this fall, with Disney using its ownership of 20th Century Studios to bring the 1980 comedy back to the big screen for a special one-week engagement.

Disney announced Sept. 25 that a newly restored version of “9 to 5” will play in theaters nationwide Oct. 9-15, 2026. The film was originally released by 20th Century Fox, the studio Disney acquired in 2019 and now operates as 20th Century Studios.

The movie marked Parton’s film debut and stars Parton alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin as three co-workers who take on their egotistical boss, played by Dabney Coleman. Colin Higgins directed the comedy.

Parton also wrote and performed the movie’s title song. “9 to 5” became a No. 1 country and pop hit, won two Grammy Awards and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.

‘9 to 5’ rerelease will support Imagination Library

The theatrical engagement will also support one of Parton’s signature philanthropic programs.

Disney will donate net proceeds from every U.S. ticket purchased for the Oct. 9-15 engagement to The Dollywood Foundation in support of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

Parton launched the Imagination Library in 1995 to foster a love of reading among children in her home county of Sevier County, Tennessee. The program eventually expanded far beyond East Tennessee and has provided millions of free books to children.

The announcement arrived Sept. 25 as part of the inaugural “Give Like Dolly Day.” The new annual 9/25 observance is a nod to “9 to 5” and celebrates Parton’s commitment to helping children and communities.

Parton died Aug. 25 at age 80. Dollywood said following her death that her wish was for the theme park to remain a place of “joy, hope and togetherness” while her work through the Imagination Library continues.
