The live-action television series will tell an original story set in the world on Eorzea, based on the franchise’s online role-playing game. Since its debut in 2013, the game has amassed millions of players around the world year over year. Final Fantasy in itself is one of the most beloved and influential franchises in gaming history.

“Television is the ideal medium to capture the extraordinary depth, sophisticated themes, and unparalleled imagination of Final Fantasy and its multitude of unique and fully realized characters,” said Jason Brown, co-founder and co-president of Hivemind. “We are working tirelessly to bring together artists from around the world who are united in honoring the extraordinary legacy of this franchise and its millions of fans around the world.”

Taking inspiration from the world and characters of the fourteenth installment in the franchise, the new show will explore the struggle between magic and technology on a quest to bring peace to a land overrun with conflict. Fans will see iconic staples of the franchise in the show – like magitek and beastmen, airships and chocobos – as well as familiar and new faces.

This will also be the live-action debut of Cid, one of the games’ central characters who has appeared in nearly every installment of the franchise to date (as well as the “Kingdom Hearts” games for fans of the Disney/Square Enix franchise).

“‘Final Fantasy XIV’ and Eorzea are the perfect gateway into Final Fantasy for longtime fans and newcomers alike,” said Chris Parnell, co-president of Sony Pictures Television. “This show is about embracing and embodying all of the elements that have made the mythos such an endlessly captivating phenomenon, and it’s an immense honor to be bringing all of Eorzea’s iconic characters, settings, and concepts – including fan-favorites like Cid, and, of course, the chocobos – to life for a television audience.”

Jason F. Brown, Sean Daniel, and Dinesh Shamdasani of Hivemind will serve as Executive Producers on the series. Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton (“Winter’s Knight,” “The Wells Initiative”) will write for the series and also serve as Executive Producers.

Stay tuned for more updates on this upcoming video game-to-television series.
