Live to 100 years old, get free root beer floats for life
A&W Restaurants have been around for 105 years, and to celebrate they’re giving free root beer floats, for life, to anyone over 100 years old.
New A&W offer for diners 100 years old and up
America’s oldest franchised restaurant chain’s co-founder, Roy W. Allen, opened his first root beer stand in Lodi, Calif. on June 20, 1905. It was a homecoming celebration for veterans of World War I. The same frosty-mugged root beer floats can be enjoyed at A&W restaurants around the world today.
A&W is getting the word out with a couple centenarians and a 95-year-old influencer. The two centenarians are both WWII veterans: Hazel Calloway (104) and Glendell Bennett (100). The influencer, better known as “granfluencer” Baddiewinkle has gained a very large following and while she can’t enjoy this deal just yet, she definitely intends to when she can.
“I’ve been a fan of A&W and their root beer floats for my whole life,” said Baddiewinkle, “so I think it’s super cool that they’re showing some love to the Greatest Generation. I’m only 95, so I’m just jelly that I don’t qualify yet. But I’m totally gonna do it when I grow up.”

“We love our fans of all ages,” said Liz Bazner, VP of marketing and innovation for A&W Restaurants, “but there are around 108,000 centenarians in the U.S. that brands overlook. These are people that have been with A&W since the beginning. We wouldn’t have survived the last century without them, so we wanted to show our appreciation with something special just for them.”
How to claim your free root beer floats
If you’re 100 years old or older, you qualify for free root beer floats for life. All you need to do is show up to an A&W restaurant and flash some identification. There are over 900 locations all over the U.S. and Asia.
If your age is only in the double digits, you can still get some sweet deals. Anyone 13 and up gets a free root beer float on their birthday each year. There are also various deals throughout the year on their burgers, cheese curds, and more. To take advantage of these deals, just join A&W’s “Rooty’s Mug Club.”
