Imagineers say Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin ride redo will be an evolution, not a revolution

Disney’s beloved Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin shooting dark ride at Magic Kingdom is gearing up for a refresh when it reopens on April 8, 2026, following a major refurbishment that closed the attraction last year. Earlier today, we were part of an exclusive interview with two of the Walt Disney World Imagineers behind the update.

Creative Director Justin Detolla explained the decision to refresh rather than overhaul the attraction: “Buzz Lightyear is a beloved attraction in our parks, and so when we looked at Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom park, we realized that the right call was evolution, not revolution.”

Creative Producer Kimberly Alison echoed this sentiment, highlighting the timeless appeal of the characters: “These characters have stood the test of time for over 30 years. They’re a great cast of characters for guests of all ages. So we wanted to preserve that for sure, but just add the new technology to it so you have an even more fun time playing this awesome game.”

The updates focus on amplifying the storytelling and gameplay without overshadowing the narrative of guests teaming up with Buzz Lightyear to defeat the evil Emperor Zurg.

“We want to make sure that the enhancements don’t overpower the story,” said Alison. “We’re storytellers. We want to preserve the story most of all … all of the enhancements we added were to do just that, enhance the story … and to just add a lot of more fun interactive elements to it, – power pack the fun in an already fun attraction.”

A key addition is Buddy, a new assistant bot character developed in collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Imagineering. Detolla described Buddy’s role. “Buddy is an assistant bot, so [he is] prepared to get Space Rangers ready for their mission out to defeat evil Emperor Zurg, doing last minute safety checks and flight checks, but then also giving a chance for guests to get some target practice in … “

The refresh introduces significant technological upgrades, including handheld blasters for greater aiming freedom, interactive media-based targets, real-time feedback on hits, and digital score screens that allow scores to exceed the previous 999,999 cap.

When asked if the tips for getting a high score will be the same in the newly refreshed ride, Alison said, “We did have an opportunity to create some more fun surprises to discover, so it’ll feel refreshed for even the super fan, which was our goal as well. So we’re preserving some things, and I recommend everyone keep an eagle eye out as you’re riding, and you’ll discover some even more fun surprises.”

For competitive players and repeat riders, the team designed varied play styles. Detolla said, “We have folks that can go in and play and be eagle eyed and be very selective in the targets they’re looking to hit. And then we also have paths for those who just like to go in and blast away.”

One of the attraction’s iconic elements, the hyperspace (also known as the speed tunnel) sequence, receives a major boost. Detolla shared, “In hyperspace, we have the final boss battle, and … you’ll actually be able to interact with the targets in that space, which is new technology for us.”

The timing aligns with broader Buzz Lightyear excitement, including the upcoming “Toy Story 5” film on June 19, 2026. When we asked if the spring reopening was coordinated with a new movie release, Alison responded, “I think we’re very excited to welcome guests this spring to enjoy the refreshed attraction, and then we’re super excited that the new film is coming out soon as well.”

Disney has already showed off additional enhancements for Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, including updated ride vehicles and more interactive elements, promising a “power-packed” experience for guests of all ages. As the attraction nears its relaunch, anticipation continues to build among fans eager to achieve Galactic Hero status once more (or will there be an even better title?)

To infinity and beyond!
