Capping off a broadcast of surprise guests for anchor Hoda Kotb’s final day on NBC’s “Today” show was Kermit the Frog, who honored Kotb with a special performance of the song “Rainbow Connection.”

Kermit’s appearance was especially poignant, as Kotb sings “Rainbow Connection” to her young daughters each night at bedtime.

Teeing up the surprise, anchor Savannah Guthrie introduced Kermit as “an icon, a legend among legends,” going on to say, “Everyone knows and loves him, fans 1 to 100.” Kermit then popped up from behind a couch, surprising Kotb as the journalist was surrounded by her children and fellow “Today” broadcasters.

Kotb’s last day as anchor was Jan. 10, 2025, though she will remain with NBC in an undisclosed capacity. Among the other surprise guests for Kotb’s final broadcast were Team USA Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles and (via video) Oprah Winfrey and Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis.

Earlier this week, visitors from “Sesame Street” stopped by the “Today” show to bid Hoda farewell: Elmo, Abby Cadabby, and Grover, who presented Kotb with her own special book, “H is for Hoda.”

Craig Melvin will replace Hoda Kotb as anchor of the “Today” show’s first two hours, alongside existing anchor Savannah Guthrie, effective Jan. 13, 2025. Melvin currently hosts the program’s third hour, which he will continue to do, according to NBC.

“Rainbow Connection” first debuted in 1979’s “The Muppet Movie,” in which the song was performed by Jim Henson as Kermit. “Rainbow Connection” was written by Paul Williams and Kenneth Ascher, who received an Oscar nomination for the tune.

Matt Vogel is Kermit’s current performer (and has been since 2017). We met Vogel as Constantine, the villain from “Muppets Most Wanted,” during a one-time-only special event in 2014 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios:
