Guests at Kings Island in Mason, Ohio, will be able to find the ride where the park’s original Phantom Theater dark ride was located from 1992 – 2002. They can also expect the familiar quirky characters and chaos of the ride to return, this time with newer technology, enhanced scenic elements, and more to the story. Kings Island announced the new 2026 ride on Aug. 28, 2025.

“Families who have visited Kings Island will remember how special the original Phantom Theater was, and they’ve always wanted it to return,” said Tony Carovillano, park manager of Kings Island. “While paying homage to the original ride, Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare’s modern and advanced features will help create new memories and stories for all who take their seat inside this amazing experience.”

  • Passholder preview: April 17

Kings Island guests can expect comedy and adventure on this new ride

The new Phantom Theater ride will quickly kick off with some laughs during a dark and stormy night. Inside, guests can enjoy a musical performance by Maestro, the theater’s organist, until a lightning strike causes an outbreak of ghost notes. These ghost notes have a tendency of causing chaos all over the theater.

In an effort to help stop the chaos of the ghost notes, guests will need to team up with No Legs Larry. He’s the head usher who will give guests the tools they need to capture these ghosts and send them back to the Maestro’s organ. Then he may continue his performance. The ride vehicles, or enchanted opera boxes, will take guests through 26 different scenes, including backstage, haunted hallways, dressing rooms, a spooky boiler room, and more.

Highlights include:

  • Interactive “spellbound flashlights”
  • Mechanic “Enchanted opera box” ride vehicles
  • New character: Arpeggio the cat
  • Multi-sensory effects (wind, sound)

Fans of the old ride will see nods to the original

Manufactured by Sally Dark Rides, the leader in indoor family dark rides, Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare is an immersive experience. Guests can expect many sensory effects such as wind and sound. Additionally, they can expect many different performers to show up, including animatronic forms of Houdelini and The Great Garbanzo to Hilda Bovine and Lionel Burymore. Around every corner is a new surprise.

Guests will also get to meet Arpeggio, Maestro’s furry feline friend. With the return of so many beloved characters, and some Easter Eggs sprinkled throughout, this new adventure is truly a nod to the original ride.
