LEGO officially greenlights fan-made Universal Monsters set
LEGO has officially approved a fan-designed Universal Monsters set through the latest LEGO Ideas review, bringing the studio’s legendary classic horror characters one step closer to becoming an official retail set.
Created by SpectralBricks, the project was one of just three submissions selected from 75 finalists during the latest LEGO Ideas review. The model serves as a tribute to Universal’s enduring legacy of classic monster movies.
The approximately 2,250-piece fan design combines several recognizable elements from Universal’s monster films into a single display model, including:
- A gothic castle with towering spires
- Frankenstein’s laboratory complete with electrical equipment
- A pipe organ
- Secret passages and hidden doors
- Detailed interior rooms
- Minifigures based on Universal’s classic monsters
According to creator SpectralBricks, the build was designed as “an all-encompassing homage” to the history of Universal Monsters rather than focusing on a single film. To accomplish that, he blended German medieval, Gothic, and French Baroque architectural influences to reflect the settings associated with the different characters.

The creator also said his longtime appreciation for Universal’s classic monsters comes from the stories themselves, noting that the films continue to resonate with audiences through themes of fear, compassion and humanity.
Years in the making
This is actually the second time SpectralBricks has submitted a Universal Monsters project to LEGO Ideas.
His original version launched several years ago, but he said the project debuted just as the COVID-19 pandemic began, making it difficult to gain momentum. After revisiting and refining the design, he resubmitted the project, where it eventually earned the 10,000 supporter votes required to reach LEGO’s official review process.
One of the creator’s favorite additions to the updated model is its hidden doors and secret passages, which were added late in development to encourage imaginative storytelling within the display.

A connection to theme park fans
The creator is also part of E Ticket Builders, an Instagram community dedicated to creating LEGO builds inspired by theme park attractions. While this approved project isn’t based on Universal Orlando’s Dark Universe, its celebration of the studio’s iconic monsters may resonate with fans who have recently rediscovered the characters through Universal’s newest attractions.

What’s next?
Now that the project has been approved, LEGO’s designers will begin adapting the fan submission into an official product. As with all LEGO Ideas sets, the final design may change before release, and LEGO has not yet announced a launch date, price, or final piece count.
The Universal Monsters project was one of only three LEGO Ideas winners in this review. The other approved fan creations were Jumanji Boardgame and Kimonos, both of which will also become official LEGO sets in the future.
