Mickey and Minnie debut Bahamian-inspired costumes for Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point

Disney Cruise Line is going for authenticity and cultural immersion with its second private island destination – Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point – and acclaimed Bahamian fashion designer, Theodore Elyett, created unique Bahamian-inspired costumes for Mickey and Minnie Mouse when they visit Lookout Cay.

Theodore Elyett grew up in Nassau, The Bahamas, surrounded by art and fashion. His mother owned her own sewing factory, and he started making dresses at an early age. In fact, Theodore’s designs first hit the runway when he was only 13 years old, in 1998 — the very year Disney Cruise Line set sail.

While Miss Bahamas wears the award-winning designer’s fashions, as does Miss Universe contestants, celebrities, brides, and more, but no celebrity may be as big as Mickey and Minnie. For their looks, Elyett drew upon the Bahamian festival of Junkanoo, and used bold, bright colors, adorned Mickey’s shorts with conch shells, and accented Minnie’s look with pineapples.

“The beauty of Mickey and Minnie’s looks are that they are literally ‘Junkanoo Fun in the Sun,’” Theodore said. “When you talk about the print, pattern, color, texture of Junkanoo, they’ve got that.”

Mickey and Minnie’s Bahamian-inspired costumes will fit right at Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. This new port on the island of Eleuthera in The Bahamas has buildings influenced by the shape of conch shells as well as the Goombay Cultural Center that embodies the spirit of Junkanoo – the Bahamian dance and music festival.

When Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point opens in June of 2024, Theodore Elyett’s work will hit a new runway, and there’s another group of customers waiting for their own designs. Elyett is working on a collection with styles for Donald and Daisy Duck, Goofy, Pluto, Chip and Dale to wear while enjoying the sunny shores of Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.
