Name a roach after your Valentine with the Bronx Zoo
It’s not so tough to be a bug, after all. Sales are now live to name a cockroach after your loved one for Valentine’s Day in partnership with the Bronx Zoo and the Wildlife Conservation Society.
“Cockroaches Last Forever”
For $15, you can name a Madagascar hissing cockroach who lives at the Bronx Zoo in New York.
The copywriter who penned the promotion’s marketing materials clearly enjoyed their assignment. Advertising copy includes these quips:
- “This Valentine’s Day, give them what they deserve!”
- “Flowers wilt and chocolates melt, but cockroaches last forever.”
- “You don’t always have the right words, but you can still give them goosebumps.”
All participants receive a certificate acknowledging their roach’s name. New “parents” can also purchase packages with roach-illustrated socks and roach plush toys. Participants can opt for a 15-minute virtual encounter a specialist who will introduce you to your cockroach and talk about how the Bronx Zoo cares for the creatures. The various packages range from $15 for a certificate only, and up to $85 for the works.
Purchases support the Wildlife Conservation Society. The organization operates the Bronx Zoo, along with the Central Park Zoo, New York Aquarium, and a handful of other New York attractions.
Participants must complete their purchase by Feb. 8, 2024 to receive the gift items in time for Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14, 2024).

Visiting Your Roach in Person
Madagascar hissing cockroaches are viewable in the “Madagascar!” exhibit at the Bronx Zoo. Other animals in the habitat include lemurs, Nile crocodiles, and mongooses.
Bronx Zoo admission is currently priced for its winter season, lasting through Mar. 28, 2024. During this period, daily tickets are $28 for guests ages 13-64, $26 for guests ages 65+, $20 for guests ages 3-12, and free for guests ages 2 and under. Learn more and purchase tickets here.
